KhoiSan want their ancient nation back

We were here first – but now are served last

Southern Africa’s first nation, the KhoiSan, have been reduced to the generic status of ‘coloureds’ by the current black Nguni-tribes ruling South Africa. The co-ruling triad: the African National Congress, the SA Communist Party and the Cosatu trade union movement, do not recognise the ethnic rights of the KhoiSan. The won’t even talk to KhoiSan leaders about it.

KRUIPER David KhoiSan leader Oom David Kruiper, beloved KhoiSan leader: and healer addressed the UN about their indigenous rights, starred in the movie The Gods Must be Crazy II, and walked from the Kalahari desert to Cape Town to plead with then-pres Thabo Mbeki to grant the KhoiSan their rights. Mbeki refused to see him… He died on June 6 2012 in Upington. He was buried in the traditional KhoiSan way in the Kalahari. No-one from the SA-cabinet attended.

Cape Town: it’s KhoiSan name is Hui !Gaep: the place where clouds gather…

CAPE TOWN FEB 16 2012 BY PAUL GLEESON                                 Cape Town Feb 16 2012: picture by Paul Gleeson

On June 28 2012 – the Khoi-San announced that they have no rights under the SA Constitution, that all their human- and civil rights to survival as southern Africa’s First Nation have been taken away – and that they want their ancient nationhood back.

Cultural Genocide of the Khoi-San

They accuse the black-African dominated ANC-regime of conducting a Cultural Genocide against them. On June 29 2012 a small group of KhoiSan decided to highlight their plight by the unofficial ‘renaming’ of the city of Cape Town.

They planted a large sign at the oldest building in South Africa, the VOC-Castle (1666) at the corner of Darling and Buitenkant Gracht  with the name they’ve always used for the entire region, namely Hui !Gaep. It means ‘Place of the Gathering Clouds’. The KhoiSan, it it very clearly seen from the archeological and linguistic history of Africa, have been at the southern point of Africa for thousands of years.

Afrikaans journalist  Elsabé Brits described the event on the video below: at the VOC-castle in Cape Town:

Hui !Gaeb was their name for Table Bay where the first buildings of what would become Cape Town were built: appropriately they planted their sign at the Dutch East-India company (VOC) ‘s Castle. Erected by the Dutch merchant-company in 1666 as a fortress. The majestic Table Mountain – where the clouds flow across so frequently like a blanket – has a Khoi-San name: !Hoerikwaggomountains rising from the sea, saidtribal spokesman, Francisco McKenzie.

“The people who came to this place,’ he explained, ‘referred to our people as ‘animals in the form of humans’ ”. And they gave us blankets which were infected with the smallpox-virus.’ About 30 people participated in the proceedings. McKenzie said the group didn’t obtain permission to raise the name-sign:  “we aren’t going to ask permission from white or black people,’ hwas quoted as saying. “The KhoiSan are not included in the Constitution and we do as a the unique first nation of South Africa, do not get any recognition. Everybody is seeking our votes – the ANC and the Democratic Alliance – but when it comes to our ethnic-rights, they rape those.’

‘ We are not coloureds: We are KhoiSan ‘

They reject being grouped under the generic nomer of ‘coloureds’. “We reject the racist etiquette of being referred to as a ‘brown’ or ‘coloured’ person – because this labelling takes away our economic- cultural- social- and constitutional rights,’ he said. The sign was sponsored by the Institute for the Restoration of the Aborigines of SA ..

This is definitely not the first time that the KhoiSan are trying to get their rights back. In fact their much-loved tribal chief and healer David Kruiper – who died on June 6 2012 in his beloved Kalahari desert – worked relentlessly for the rights of his people: during the Mbeki-reign he walked from the Kalahari north of Upington to Cape Town to talk to then-president Thabo Mbeki about the land-rights question and the precarious situation the KhoiSan were in. Mbeki refused to speak to him.  He went all the way to the United Nations in Geneva to speak in support of the adopted resolution  that the first indigenous nations have to be given land-rights.  Mr Kruiper died:  never realising his dream. Lawsuit in Equality Court: Sept 2010

In September 2010, the KhoiSan community launched a suit in the Equality Court regarding a the cultural genocide and discrimination against the Khoisan Nation. They denounced  both the previous apartheid-regime and the present  ANC-regime for classifying them as “coloureds”. Francisco Mackenzie of the Institute of the Restoration of the Aborigines of South Africa said being called “coloureds” was a “classification that helped to keep us in bondage”.Mackenzie said the constitution of the country discriminated against his people, as it did not recognise their rights as the Khoisan people. Frank Smith of the Circle of Elders and Indigenous Leaders said: “In 1950 white people passed a law to declare us as coloured. We fought in the struggle to have the name ‘kaffir’ removed –   now how about ‘coloured’? These are rude names. We are saying that Bushmen (Boesmans) want to be called Bushmen, the Khoisan wants to be called Khoisan,” he said.Khoi Mclaren Holloway, a community leader from Atlantis, said that they were demanding the government to recognise their leadership and 18 clans that included the Namaqua, Griqua and Hessequa.

And destitute KhoiSan tribal member Mrs Irene Grootboom of the Bloekombos community near Kraaifontein won a victory on the Constitutional Court for land- and housing-rights for her people: although she never benefited herself: The Constitutional Court ruled that the state had to provide her with a home. However, she died before she got her house.

sources and related background:

Above:  Traditional leader and healer of the Khomani-San of the Kalahari in South Africa, Oom Dawid Kruiper, died on June 6 2012. Kruiper is well-known for his acting role in the 1989 movie by Jamie Uys, ‘The Gods Must Be Crazy II’. Kruiper addressed the United Nations in Geneva on the rights on indigenous people in 1994. He led the way for land-claims in South Africa for the San people – who according to the linguistic and archeological record of Africa have lived throughout the continent of Africa for many tens of thousands of years. The secretary-general of the Khoi San Council in Gauteng and the Provinces of the North, Gordon Cassin said Kruiper’s death was a great loss to the Khoi San nation and South Africa. It is noticed that Mr Cassim referred to their own community as the ‘Boesman’ .

The recent congress of of First Indigenous Leaders of of South Africa(Irasa) claim that the ANC government are persisting with cultural genocide against descendants of the Khoisan-and have lodged a complaint against President Zuma his cabinet- and the National house of traditional leaders and have lodged their case with the clerk of the equality court. Cape Times Tuesday July 23rd.
The Khoisan congress said the govt had failed to respect a UN protocol on the rights of Indiginous people around the world because it refused to recognise the Khoisan as a antion or give it the first nation Status as aboriginal status as aboriginal nations in other countries.Let it be said at this point that the Khoisan , San or Bushman have lived in Southern Africa for 22 000 years -meantime many ANC Blacks accuse whites of stealing Black land yet the ANC government does not recognise the rights or status of the Khoisan and recognise them as the original occupants of South Africa-and throught their policies continue to systematically wipe out their history, rights and cultural heritage .

The Government of South Africa versus Irene Grootboom: the right to housing:  “The court held that the state was obliged to take positive action to meet the needs of those living in extreme conditions of poverty, homelessness or intolerable housing. The interconnectedness of the rights and the Constitution as a whole had to be taken into account in interpreting the socio-economic rights and, in particular, in determining whether the state had met its obligations in terms of them.[10] Section 26 as a whole placed at the very least a negative obligation on the state and all other entities and persons to desist from preventing or impairing the right of access to adequate housing.

Smallpox: “Human diseases such as smallpox and measles developed from diseases among domestic animals. Farmers handling the animals eventually become resistant to those diseases – however hunter-gatherers like the KhoiSan don’t: so when hunter-gatherers first come into contact with farmers, they tend to die in droves from the farmers’ diseases (“The Arrow of Disease,” October 1992, Discovery Magazine). (…) “Eurasian germs played a key role in decimating native peoples in many other parts of the world as well, including the Pacific islands, Australia, and southern Africa. Europeans used to attribute those ‘conquests’ to their supposedly better brains. But no evidence for such better brains has been forthcoming. Instead, the conquests were made possible by Europeans’ nastier germs, and by the technological advances and denser populations that Europeans ultimately acquired by means of their domesticated plants and animals.’

How Africa Became Black: the Destruction of the KhoiSan by the Bantu-speaking peoples from Cameroon and Nigeria:   “The nearly 200-million Bantu-speaking people now flung over much of the map of Africa arose in Cameroon and Nigeria. Linguistics tell us not only that the Pygmies and the Khoisan, who formerly ranged widely over the continent, were engulfed by blacks; it also tells us that the blacks who did the engulfing were Bantu speakers.

The enslavement and decimation of the KhoiSan by the black Bantu-speaking Nguni tribes:  South Africa was  home to some of the earliest humans on earth. Archaeological evidence suggests that human populations evolved in the broad region of south central and eastern Africa, perhaps as early as 2-million years ago, but at least 200,000 years ago. Fossil remains of Homo sapiens in eastern South Africa have been tentatively dated to 50,000 years ago, and other remains show evidence of iron smelting about 1,700 years ago in the area that became the northern Transvaal. It is clear that the San and Khoikhoi (also called Khoi) peoples have been in southern Africa longer than any other living population. San hunters and gatherers and Khoikhoi herdsmen, known together as Khoisan because of cultural and linguistic similarities, were called “Bushmen” and “Hottentots” by early European settlers. Both of these terms are considered pejorative in the late twentieth century and are seldom used. Most of the nearly 3million South Africans of “mixed-race” ancestry (so-called “coloureds”) are descendants of Khoisan peoples and Europeans over the past three centuries.” Black Bantu-speakers who arrived in southern Africa from the north  displaced or killed Khoisan peoples they encountered – but not always: they did allow many others to live among them peacefully. Most Bantu societies were organized into villages and chiefdoms, and their economies relied primarily on livestock and crop cultivation. Their early ethnic identities were fluid and shifted according to political and social demands. For example, the Nguni or Nguni speakers, one of the largest Bantu language groups, have been a diverse and expanding population for several centuries. When groups clashed with one another, or their communities became too large, their political identity could easily shift to emphasize their loyalty to a specific leader or descent from a specific forebear. Historians believe that the ancestors of the Nguni-speaking Xhosa peoples were the first Bantu speakers to reach the southern tip of the continent. The Zulu, a related group of small chiefdoms, arrived soon after, and by the early nineteenth century they had evolved into a large, predatory kingdom. Zulu armies displaced or destroyed many small chiefdoms, and in the upheaval some of those who fled north probably retraced the pathways their ancestors had used centuries earlier as they moved into the region. Others were subjugated and assimilated into Zulu society, and a few–the forebears of today’s Swazi and Sotho peoples–resisted Zulu advances and withdrew into mountainous regions that would later become independent nations. European travelers and explorers visited southern Africa over the centuries and, after the mid-seventeenth century, began settling near the Cape of Good Hope. Dutch immigrants moved inland from the coast in search of farmland and independence, especially during the nineteenth century, when their migration became known as the “Great Trek.” British merchants, farmers, and missionaries arrived in large numbers during the nineteenth century. Asians, including merchants and traders as well as laborers and slaves, arrived from India, China, Malaya, and the Indonesian archipelago. South Africa began to develop a multiethnic mercantile, trading, and financial class, based primarily on the country’s mineral wealth after the discovery of diamonds and gold in the 1880s.

Strasbourg July 4 EuroParl highlights farm murders, SA

On July 4 2012, there will be a second information meeting at the European Parliament  in Strasbourg to inform the MEC’s about the ongoing murders of ethnic-European South African farmers. At the previous meeting in Brussels, Transvaal Agricultural Union vice-president Henk van den Graaf said:

The farm murders are not ordinary crimes but fit into the context in which the ANC-regime wants to rid itself of especially its Afrikaner- and other white farmers purely for political reasons. This is in other words, a genocide and a crime against humanity.’

This time the European Parliament will hear from  an opposition-party MP in South Africa, Mr Andre Fourie, who is the spokesman on foreign affairs for the Freedom Front – which profiles itself as ‘the party of the farmers in South Africa.Their party leader Pieter Mulder (below) serves as the deputy-Agriculture Minister in the Zuma-cabinet.

Invitation to meeting JULY 4 2012 – at European Parliament building S3.3 in Strasbourg from 10h00 – 11h30 – about the farm murders in South Africa

farm murder EP STRASSBOURG JULY 7 2012

We received the invitation above from Euro-MP Emiel Van Dijk & co-convenor Philip Claeys The invitation was addressed to the Members of the European Parliament’s 7th Legislation session: namely to DL-MEP&

At the first European-Parliamentary hearing dealing with the SA farm murders in Brussels, the Transvaal Agricultural Union’s VP Henk van den Graaf was on hand to provide background information to the Written Declaration Nr 43 at the EP lodged by Euro-MPs Philip Claeys (Flanders), Andreas Mölzer (Austria), Fiorello Provera of Italy and 45 MPs. Afterwards, Mr Van de Graaf travelled to the Hague, where he also lodged a formal genocide-complaint at International Criminal Court  on Feb 2 2012 and SA President Zuma and specific members and former members of his Cabinet.

Address by Transvaal Agricultural Union deputy-chairman, Henk van de Graaf:  English-language interview with Henk van de Graaf by conducted by Nick Griffin, MEC – European Parliament:

Henk van de Graaf’s Interview with European Parliament TV in Dutch:

Feb 2 2012 – Brussels EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT. BRUSSELS. South African farmers represented in the Transvaal Agricultural Union have lodged a formal genocide-complaint against the ANC-government for crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, announced TAU deputy-chairman Henk van de Graaf.

TLU depy chairman Henk van de Graaf interviewed on European Parliament TV about his formal genocide charge against ANC regime

Left: Van der Graaf was interviewed by European Parliament TV and various Belgian TV-stations about his lodging formal genocide complaint against ANC-regime

“The farm murders are not ordinary crimes but fit into the context in which the ANC-regime wants to rid itself of especially its Afrikaner- and other white farmers purely for political reasons. This is in other words, a genocide and a crime against humanity.’

This was the shocking message by the South African Henk van de Graaf, the deputy-chairman of the Transvaal Agricultural Union. He was addressing the European parliament’s international conference, attended by more than 50 European parliamentarians and other high-level functionaries from Great-Britain, France, Italy, Flanders and Austria.

“The farm-murders are encouraged in a deliberate atmosphere of violence created by the ANC-regime against its (white) farmers. The ANC is for instance constantly telling unproven stories about farm-workers being poorly treated – even though the evidence is always sorely lacking for their claims.  He said: “Our farmers also are unjustly and without any kind of proof, arrested and accused of crimes: one statement by (suspended) ANC youth leader Julius Malema was: ‘Shoot the Boers, they are all rapists’. The ANC is also constantly claiming that ‘the whites own 80% of all the land – when in  fact the private-farmland ownership only was 33% ten years ago in 2001 – and has been rapidly dropping ever since. Meanwhile the extent of the farm murders indicates that this is a genocide: with the Transvaal Agricultural Union verifying 1,554 murders, this statistic is very understated, said Mr Van de Graaf. Thus far in January 2012, a total of 17 Afrikaner people were murdered – of whom at least six on farms.

“The Afrikaners are calling on the world to help stop the genocide, the farm murders, in South Africa. To this end the Transvaal Agricultural Union has lodged a formal genocide complaint at the International Criminal Court,’ he concluded.

Euro-MP Philip Claeys, who hosted the conference, said ‘we will do our utmost to continue to place this problem on our agenda over the next months.” Hence the July 4 2012 session in Strasbourg.

Below- typical example of ANC-genocidal hatespeech incitements as noted in Mr Henk van de Graaf’s address to the European Parliamentary conference on the SA farm murders: VENTERSDORP February 1 2011 – ANC hate-speech protestors at the murder-trial of two black males who stand accused of hacking to death Boer farmer Eugene Terre’Blanche on his Ventersdorp farm:

Zuid-Afrikaanse boeren dienen klacht in tegen ANC-regering wegens misdaden

War threats, hate crimes soar against SA whites: June

Updated with name-list of victims up to June 22 2012:

June 26 2012. By Adriana Stuijt. The violence and public threats of war by ruling-party leaders against Afrikaners, Boers and white English-speaking South Africans escalated considerably in June. The catalyst was the ‘declaration of war against farmers’ issued by ANC youth leader Ronald Lamola.  Afriforum ‘s meeting with ANCYL shook the Afrikaners to the core:

Lamola’s declaration of war so alarmed the civil-rights organisation Afriforum that they held an urgent meeting with Lamola and his comrades this week – and the Afrikaners’attempts to get clarification on Lamola’s statement (‘Land Reform needs an act as forceful as war’ were reportedly treated so brutally and rudely that they came away with the realisation that the African National Congress’ younger generation had ‘extensive war plans’, they said:

Charl Oberholzer of Afriforum Tweeted: “Just finished ANCYL meet: they are highly aggressive and have much bigger plans than our people had realised’.
And his colleague Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg on his face book page: “After leaving the ANCYL meeting one realises Lamola isn’t a stupid idiot like Malema. This clever lawyer from Brooklyn means everything he says and is very clearly aware of the impact his words are making. I fear you will have to start trading your Rands for Dollars’.   “Die Vryburger” writes that the Boere-Afrikanervolksraad has called an emergency-meeting for this Saturday – also related to widespread claims of new, organised troop-movements at the Lesotho and other borders by the SANDF.

Criminal charges of intimidation and incitement to murder against Lamola by DA-MEC Anthony Benadie :

Also, the Mpumalanga legislature’s DA-leader in Mpumalanga and MEC for Rustenburg lodged a criminal charge of intimidation and incitement to violence against Lamola – and the Rustenburg SAPS commanding officer came to the police station on Sunday specifically to assist the MEC in laying the charge:

“Afrikaners must defend themselves against this war declared against them by Lamola” – TLU, Verkenners, Afriforum:

The Transvaal Agricultural Union of SA and the Verkenners (Afrikaans Scouts) movements both issued statements in quick succession, condemning Lamola’s war-talk. Both groups responded by saying that ‘Afrikaners and Boers now had no other choice left except to get ready to defend themselves against a war which was declared against them.’

The hatecrimes against Afrikaners, Boers and white English-speaking South Africans also have become more more violent and aggressive in June. Every day this month there have been an average of four violence-driven riots, ranging from Olifantshoek in the Northern Cape to Botrivier in the Western Cape.

Hatecrimes against whites soared in June:

The criminologists meanwhile have listed the following confirmed hatecrime-and other incidents thus far this June: and more daily incidents of black-racist hate-attacks against South African whites are still being investigated:

Afriforum’s Charles Oberholzer, Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg and others held an emergency meeting with ANC youth league Lamola and his colleagues about the ‘Wartalk threat’. Afriforum issued the following update on its results: writing that ‘Afriforum Youth will continue its steps against Lamola after his refusal to apologise.  The deputy-president of ANCYL refused to apologise for his recent comments in public threatenng the safety of farmers. He indicated that he ‘had no intention to stop making such statements. IN reaction AfroForum Youth told him that a formal charge of hatespeech would be lodged against Lamola in the Equality court. It has also been noticed that a criminal charge of intimidation and incitement to violence has also been lodged (by DA-MEC Anthony Conradie at the Rustenburg SAPS.)

    Leading Afrikaners protest in Pretoria

On Tuesday, June 19 2012, more than 2,000 of South Africa’s less than 3,5million  Afrikaners undertook a peaceful protest in Pretoria, marching to the Union Buildings to hand in a memorandum against the brutal violence their community is targetted with by the black-African  majority. Thirty leading Afrikaners led the calm procession. All the participants were dressed in black. There were no incidents of violence. The Afrikaners also left the procession-route cleaner than it was before their progress through Pretoria.

    • Sedert 2003 is bykans ʼn halfmiljoen seksuele (471,000) misdrywe soos verkragting gepleeg.
Amper 1-miljoen swartmense het hul werk as gevolg hiervan verloor.

Drie keer soveel mense vermoor in Suid-Afrika vermoor as tydens die burgeroorlog in Irak:

Tydens die oorlog in Irak het 116,000 burgerlikes omgekom. In Suid-Afrika is daar sedert 1994 drie keer soveel mense vermoor.

Thousands of black asylum-seekers riot at Pretoria Home Affairs office protesting against corruption:

Posted: 14 Jun 2012 On June 13 2012, rioting broke out at the Pretoria West Home Affairs satellite processing-office for black-African asylum seekers. South Africa is being flooded with black-African asylum seekers ever since, under the Mbeki-regime, the country threw open its borders.

Above, brief YouTube clip June 13 2012 shows rioting against ‘corruption’ at the Pretoria asylum-seekers’ processing centre in Pretoria West. Rioting also continued on June 14. South Africa has more than 6-million black-African residents who stream across the open-borders and try to apply for political asylum. Many are pregnant women who deliver their babies inside South Africa: which gives them the right to apply for child-care benefits in the country. The clip shows that the SAPS is struggling to cope with the large masses of people waiting to get application forms for political asylum:

Sky News shows ‘mob-justice’ system in South Africa – as filmed in Diepsloot: 3:29pm UK, Wednesday June 13, 2012 Alex Crawford in Johannesburg – The “punishments”, which often result in death, are regular occurrences in the impoverished townships across South Africa.Township people are taking matters into their own hands.  In one incident, a man from Malawi is seen naked and bleeding, sitting in the centre of a pack of men, as the camera is recording everything. The men around him are clearly holding sticks, some have stones and others have bricks in their hands.

He is kicked and whipped and when he tries to run away, he’s felled and yet more stones are thrown at him. They leave him to recover and then he’s hauled in front of the mob again only to be beaten further. At one stage you can see two women whipping him – deliberately aiming for his genitalia as the crowd yells encouragement to them.

Incredibly cruel torture & mob-rape murders soared after traditional leaders tell ANC to ‘stop protecting gays’

13 Jun 2012 The number of homophobic hatecrimes are increasing in South Africa. One June 2012 the homosexual man Thapelo Makutle, 23, was attacked in the Northern Cape region near Kuruman he came from. He was attacked by two men who picked an argument with him. The two men then allegedly decapicated him. Mr Makutle openly identified himself as being a homosexual and ‘transgender’ person.

HOMOSEXUAL HATE CRIME THAPELO MAKUTLE WAS BEHEADED FOR BEING MsGayKuruman June132012  He worked in the Legbo northern Cape community as a volunteer to help provide support for other persons with similar problems to his own. He was recently crowned ‘Miss Gay Kuruman’ and had taken part in a gay festival in Kimberley. Mr Shaine Grequa of his organisation said that ‘hate crimes were on the rise in the province.’

Such hatecrimes have also increased in the rest of South Africa. Officially, 24 murders due to homophobic hate-crimes were logged in South Africa on the site thus far: fifteen black lesbians were murdered in Khayelitsha by black-male mobs after gang-rapes failed ‘to re-educate them’; and eight gay men also were murdered in SA’s urban centres: 1 man in Cape Town, 7 in Gauteng. White SADF soldiers not War Vets? ANC

June 5 2011. Intense anger has erupted amongst the many tens of thousands of white, pre-1994 SADF veterans who fought from the age of 17 to 55 years in the fierce South African border wars  against armed, communist infiltration. The  communist ANC-regime now refuses to qualify white ex-soldiers as  ‘’ war veterans’.  They will get no benefits, no access to badly needed free health care….

If anyone wishes to enquire whether they qualify for benefits: contact:

The veterans are planning to ask Afriforum to sue the communist-ANC regime in the Constitutional Court about the issue. (to join the class-action law-suit write to: )

The overwhelming majority of white South African males were required to serve in the Defence Force from the age of 17 to 55 years before 1994: the first two years were intensive military training, thereafter they had to serve another six years (720 days) in the Standing force.  The majority of these men today remain inordinately proud of their military skills and successes: they did their duty  which was to defend their country and all its people from armed aggression. Many of the soldiers also say they were winning the border-wars: but the National-Party politicians sold out this finely-honed fighting force in a political cop-out  and handed them over – unarmed – to their enemies:

    Long years of military service

Many of these many tens of thousands of white male draftees today are traumatised and permanently disabled from their long years of  military service – their veterans-association has a list of 7,500 totally destitute , physically-disabled white war-vets who need help now. Yet these white men will not be eligible for any benefits under the new Military Veterans Act, says ANC-deputy-minister Thabang Makwetla – who confirmed his black-racist approach by adding that the white soldiers ‘were not disadvantaged by doing military service and are not entitled to state-benefits…’

Afrikaans journalist Pieter du Toit recorded his comment in ‘Die Burger’  newspaper when Makwetla addressed the defence portfolio committee in parliament.  His spokesman Ntime Skhosana, asked for further clarification,  also showed the present regime’s black-racist prejudicial views when he said: “remember that (white) military draftees only had to serve two years and then were discharged to go back to their universities or get jobs…’   He implied that they ‘had it easy’.

However the vets’ spokesman, ret. Lt-Gen Godfrey Giles, who chairs the veterans’ organisation, reportedly was  ‘shattered’ by the decision to exclude white males from the benefits system under the new Military Veterans Act.  He also is the deputy chair for the umbrella body, the SA Military veterans’ association. He said his organisation has a database of 7,500 destitute, white military veterans who are in urgent need of medical and financial help.

The ANC-regime’s proposed new Act would provide a wide range of help to war-vets including health care and pension benefits – yet Makwetla now claims that these white veterans – who were drafted into military service – would be excluded from these benefit-packages.

Giles slammed Makwetla’s claim as ‘absolute rubbish and noted: “the subject was not even mentioned in the consulation process and shows a very weak knowledge of the genuine needs of these ex-soldiers, many of whom fought hard in defence of their country in the South African border-wars.  The needs of these white war-vets is indeed very great: many now sleep at bus-stops and live in squatter-camps’.

‘ White males carried a heavy burden of military duty between 17 and 55 years of age ‘

The handful of white South African males indeed carried a very heavy burden of military duty before 1994: they received their first callups at the age of 17 for basic training camps which lasted two years. And for a full six years thereafter, white males also had to serve a total 720 days in the Standing forces. From the age of 17 to 55, white males were obligated to do military duty of some kind:  most white males spent most of their weekends away on military- or commando-duties. Once they reached the age of 55, many also continued this duty to their country by unpaid volunteer service in the Active Civilian Militias and in the local military  commando units.

Neverhteless, said Makwetla, the law is being drawn up with the understanding that  ‘none of the pre-1994 military draftees ‘were considered to be members of the Active defence force and would therefore excluded from the legal definition of ‘military veterans’. They were ‘still taking further legal advice on the matter,’ he claimed.

Afrikaner war veterans excluded from ANC War Veterans Act pensions

The pre-1994 South African Defence Force:

At the age of 17, all white SA males were called up for two-year military training – and for twelve years thereafter, they were obligated to serve another 720 days (six years) in the Standing SA Defence Force of that time. After this active military-service, all white South African males had the option of serving another five years in the Active Civilian Force. They still were also called up for 12 days active duty in the Commando units which protected their own regions. The official government viewpoint noted that ‘the entire SA Defence Force thus is a civilian militia.’  White males were obligated to do military duty; non-whites volunteered: such as the Afrikaans-speaking Khoi-San volunteer soldiers of the Cape Corps, an outstanding infantry batallion – who excelled in their military actions in Namibia and in the SA Navy.  The first volunteer unit for black soldiers, 21st bn, was launched in 1974 at Lenz near Johannesburg.  The SA Defence Force also served and died as Allied soldiers during the two World Wars and in the Korean war. South Africa also created Armscorps, its own military-industrial complex which became the biggest on the African continent – to help pay for its defence budget, which by 1987 had soared to R5,000-m – 13.7% of its total expenditure.
