Afrikaners of Welkom in deep trouble from gold-piracy gangs

Alcoholic, homeless murderer Victor Albert Levings, 36, blamed his impoverished ex-girlfriend Mrs “Ansie” Anna Velthuysen for all his troubles. The Afrikaner woman, who hails from Kroonstad, had just moved into the mining-town of Welkom’s poorest suburb, Dagbreek two months earlier with her two children. On June 5 2011 after he had been sleeping rough in the woods, Levings climbed through the window of his ‘ex-girlfriend’s’ rented mine-house in Dagbreek after a heavy drinking session – and stabbed her and her two small children to death in their beds with his switchblade knife, he testified.
Yet not one of the neighbours had noticed that three people were being slaughtered with a pocket-knife: the working-class Afrikaners of the gold-mining town of Welkom live in a state of siege from thousands of armed gold-pirates called ‘zama-zamas’ . The community spirit of the Afrikaners in Welkom is slowly ebbing away as the town sinks into destitution, addiction and lawlessness. link
The once so motivated, community-spirited working-class Afrikaners in Welkom are living in a state of siege from illegal gold-mine pirate-gangs – and the town’s vibrancy is slowly ebbing away into destitution, homelessness, addiction and hopelessness:
Nov 14 2011 – Shock testimony in Virginia High court reveals in his own words the way he carried out his cruel, vengeful stabbing-murders of a defenceless family by Victor Albert Levings, 36. (right: picture by Volksblad photographer Theo Jeptha). He used a switchblade knife to slaughter his ex-girlfriend Anna Magdalena Velthuysen, 46 and her two children Marthinus, 9, and Dominique, 8.
Mrs Velthuysen had moved into the old mining-company house at Haarlem Street 151 in the Afrikaner working-class suburb of Dagbreek two months earlier — and no-one in the neighbourhood knew them very well.
In this mining-town, all the remaining Afrikaner ex-mineworkers and their families live in a state of siege from the large gangs of illegal gold-dust sifters referred to as zama-zamas. So many residents are moving away and near-destitute families such as the Velthuysens are moving in. The town’s community life is disappearing, many residents say, because of the violence created by the zama-zamas. (report on http://censorbugbear-reports.blogspot.com/2011/07/chaos-grows-in-sa.html)
The Velthuysen family was stabbed to death on June 5 2011 at 02:00 in their beds at the mining town of Dagbreek, Welkom. (picture of Levings by Volksblad photographer Theo Jeptha) Levings testified in Virginia High Court on November 14 2011 that while he was stabbing the mother, little Dominique had called to him from her bedroom – where she was hiding underneath the bed, asking him if she could go to the toilet. “Uncle Victor, I want to pee but I cannot get up,’ she told him. Instead he dragged her out from beneath her bed, stabbed her and also smothered her – and then stabbed her brother Marthinus in the bed next to hers.” He died quickly and I did not need to smother him,’ the man testified.
The Afrikaners in the mining town of Welkom live under a state of siege – and the community is falling apart: Picture above: In the first news-item published shortly after the triple-murders, it was claimed that the little boy had been hiding underneath the bed – but from the killer’s own testimony, it had been the girl who was dragged out and stabbed to death.
Volksblad journalist Marisa Phillips attended the trial. She described his testimony telling the court that he was sleeping rough in the woods after his estrangement from Mrs Velthuysen. On June 5, he woke up at around 2am after a heavy drinking session, and drank some more. “I sat on the dog’s blanket outside the house and realised that everything which had gone wrong in my life, was the fault of Anna Velthuysen.”
He does not want to apply for bail:
He went to her bedroom, smoked a cigarette and stabbed her in the upper body until she lay still on the ground. He left the room but returned to find her ‘busy on her cellphone, he testified.
So he kept stabbing her. ‘She fell and I smothered her with my hand because she was still breathing and I did not know how to kill her. She stopped breathing then and I realised I had killed her.’ He went to the kitchen, drank a headache-powder, smoked a cigarette. He then stabbed to death Dominique and also smothered her after the child had called out to him.
“I was thinking about how I should kill Marthinus and was getting up the courage to do it. He died quickly and it wasn’t necessary to smother him too’, he testified. He then turned himself over to the police. He did not want to apply for bail.
His sentencing is scheduled in the same court for 26 and 27 January. Adv. Johan Roothman was the public prosecutor. Mrs Velthuysen’s brother Ernest Potgieter, his wife Jakkie and daughter Riana of Kroonstad attended the trial.
