Beeld journalist Susan Cilliers – RUSTENBURG The Du Plessis couple were dedicated breeders of valuable parrots. He was however physically-frail and relied on workers to help them run their business enterprise. But the two bird-breeders were forced to fire two black workers two weeks earlier due to incompetence – and then were threatened that they would be ‘murdered like Eugene Terre’Blanche’.
On Nov 2 2011 Jackie and Don du Plessis, 68 and 72, were attacked early in the morning while feeding their bird-collection. Mrs Du Plessis was shot in the head and her husband was bludgeoned to death. They were first tied up. The couple were found murdered by friends Mrs Brenda Clement and her husband who had gone to the smallholding because Mrs du Plessis had failed to show up for her Bible-study.The couple’s daughter Vanessa Evans said that she was convinced that the Zimbabwean couple who worked for her mother, could be involved: ‘they threatened to kill my parents. The police must catch them”. Something ominous also happened to her parents just a day before the murder: enroute to the Johannesburg Airport, one of their vehicle’s wheels just dropped off.It was found that three of the four bolts attaching the wheel to the vehicle had been sawn through. “Clearly they were sabotaged’. She said her stepfather was ‘not healthy’ and relied on the work from helpers. “He often hired Zimbabweans to work for him,’ she said. Mrs Du Plessis herself also was involved in work-creation projects in the local black community. Her other two daughters Mrs Lindy Tennant en Anne Lloyd were enroute from the West Cape and Switserland, Beeld noted.
The family says they are also urgently ‘looking for buyers’ for the couple’s 85 parrots.

These mining-towns, plunged into destitution because of the plundering and destruction of the Zuma/Mandela owned Aurora goldmines, are in dire straights. These former mining-families cannot afford expensive security, struggle to survive and can’t fight against the many black so-called ‘gold pirates’ (zamazamas) who sift for gold-dust throughout the area. Especially the white women with small children are increasingly targetted by armed attackers who assault these defenceless families at will inside their own homes – 24 October 2011. The two white South African pilots involved in failed Simon Mann coup-attempt in Equatorial_Guinea in 2004 flew SA President Jacob Zuma’s plane..
2011-11-03 – source: Erika Gibson, Beeld – Pretoria – South Africa’s secretary of defence and chief of the air force have quit their jobs because mercenary pilots flew VIPs like Zuma.
Mpumi Mpofu, taken on as defence secretary less than two years ago. resigned 2 week sago. And lt-Genl Carlo Gagiano also offered to quit but ‘the Minister has not yet accepted his resignation’. The resignations came after it was revealed that the very slow state-procurement process caused a huge delay in depositing the money allocated to ‘buy proper planes to fly the president and his deputy” is not accessable. It apparently never entered anybody’s mind to just buy tickets on commercial flights. Lt-Genl Gagiano apparently reached the end of his tether about all the frustrations he had to endure two weeks ago. That’s when deputy-president Kgalema Motlanthe ‘was forced to take a commercial flight to Scandinavia’ because technical problems grounded the chartered flight booked for his delegation.A second chartered plane was sent. And anger also erupted in cabinet-circles when it was found that the charter-pilots who flew Pres Jacob Zuma to the UN General Assembly in New York in September, ‘had served jail sentences for their involvement in the failed Simon Mann coup attempt in Equatorial Guinea in 2004.” Meanwhile there’s even more frustration over the ‘delay in buying two new planes to fly VIPs: The contract for the planes was initially awarded to a company owned by a Nigerian group. This company recently sued the air force for delaying the contract. No plans have yet been finalised for the two planes. The “old’ presidential plane, Inkwazi bought during the Thabo Mbeki-era, has been grounded for two months for servicing. Two years ago Motlanthe also was on a chartered plane when it was forced to make an emergency landing in the dark on an airfield in the Democratic Republic of Congo after a technical problem.
Simon Mann’s coup attempt:
On 7 March 2004 Simon Mann and 69 others were arrested in Zimbabwe when their Boeing 727 was seized by security forces during a stop-off at Harare airport where the aircraft was due to be loaded with £100,000 worth of weapons and equipment. The men were charged with violating the country’s immigration, firearms and security laws and later accused of engaging in an attempt to stage a coup d’état in Equatorial Guinea. Meanwhile eight suspected mercenaries, one of whom later died in prison, were detained in Equatorial Guinea in connection with the alleged plot.
Mann and the others claimed that they were not on their way to Equatorial Guinea but were in fact flying to the Democratic Republic of Congo in order to provide security for diamond mines owned by JFPI Corporation. Mann and his colleagues were put on trial in Zimbabwe, and, on 27 August, Mann was found guilty of attempting to buy arms for an alleged coup plot and sentenced to 7 years imprisonment. 66 of the others were acquitted.
On 25 August 2004, Sir Mark Thatcher, son of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, was arrested at his home in Cape Town, South Africa. He eventually pleaded guilty (under a plea bargain) to negligently supplying financial assistance for the plot. The 14 men in the mercenary advance guard that were caught in Equatorial Guinea were sentenced to jail for 34 years. Among the advance guard was Nick du Toit who said he was introduced to Thatcher by Mann. Investigations would later reveal in the financial records of Mann’s holdings that large transfers of money were made to Nick du Toit, as well as approximately US$2 million coming in from an untraceable and unknown source. On 10 September Mann was sentenced to seven years in jail. His compatriots received one-year sentences for violating immigration laws and their two white South African pilots got 16 months. The group’s Boeing 727 was seized, as well as the US$180,000 that was found on board the plane.
Julian Lewis UK MP said in Parliament:
“My constituent, Mr. Simon Mann, has completed his jail sentence in Zimbabwe but has been transferred by the Mugabe regime to a potentially terrible fate in Equatorial Guinea, despite the fact that his appeals processes have not been completed and despite the assurances given to the British ambassador to Zimbabwe that that would not happen. May we have a statement as soon as possible on the Floor of the House from the Foreign Secretary about what action is going to be taken? Quiet diplomacy has failed and we now have to save Mr. Mann, whatever he has or has not done, from torture and a horrible death in a terrible situation.
His position was supported by three other Conservative MPs during the debate. Written questions were submitted by a fourth. There was a request that the United States administration, who had access to Simon Mann in Black Beach Prison on 6 February 2008, exert its influence “to secure [his] safe return”. UK officials were granted access to him on 12 February. The only non-Conservative Party MP to submit a question in Parliament about him was Vince Cable, although an Early Day Motion about his treatment in prison received some cross-party support. On 8 March 2008, Channel 4 in the UK won a legal battle to broadcast an interview with Mann in which he named British political figures, including Ministers, alleged to have given tacit approval to the coup plot. In testimony he spoke frankly about the events leading to the botched attempt to topple Equatorial Guinea’s president. On 7 July 2008, Mann was sentenced by the Equatorial Guinea court to more than 34 years in jail. He was sent back to England on 2 Nov 2009 after a’complete pardon’ by Pres Teodoro Obiang Nguema’.
