Adriana Stuijt writes: Two weeks ago, I was asked to write a weekly Saturday-afternoon guest column in the Dutch free freech publication http://www.artikel7.nu – named after Article 7, the free speech clause in the Dutch Constitution.
I hesitated: having obtained my education in South Africa at Afrikaans schools, my Dutch is riddled with Afrikaans, I think in Afrikaans and then translate it to Dutch: thus my Dutch grammar is horrific. ‘They didn’t care about that…’ they replied: ‘that would merely add charm to the writing”. Always a sucker for flattery, I thus wrote a cautious first article: ‘Zuma infuriates millions of Christians’ (right) and got some equally cautious nibbles.
However my second article, “Senseless violence in South Africa’ (left) started up a very promising debate: people asked some very probing questions, others added their own personal experiences. This really surprised me: clearly some Dutch correspondents in South Africa seem to just sort of toe the ‘ANC-propaganda line’ – in any case they obviously show very little interest in informing their readers about the horrifically violent way in which so many tens of thousands of Afrikaners are being slaughtered since 1994. I’m hoping to tell them even more things which I hope will draw more attention to the ‘Real South Africa’ – not the ‘good news only’ one from the Dutch holiday-brochures.
