April 6 2011 – Pretoria businessman Koos Smiley Vermeulen, 62, was murdered in a road-rage attack near his home at Rietfontein smallholdings in Pretoria. Vermeulen owned the Vermilian paint company in Capital Park. Eye-witnesses said that Mr Vermeulen died after he was beaten over the head by a man with his fists. Apparently both men had climbed from their vehicles and Mr Vermeulen was assaulted. The details remain murky at this stage.
One witness chased after the assaillant, others wrote down the registration number of the assaillant’s car. The assailant’s identity is expected to be released after his first court-remand hearing today.
Police captain Brian Plaatjies of the Lyttelton police station confirmed that as a result, the man was arrested and being charged with murder.
Mrs Marguerite Vermeulen, 53, the dead man’s wife, came across him just minutes later: she had been following his bakkie on her motorbike when drove off to their jobs. She found him lying on the tarmac next to his bakkie on the crossing of Delmas Road (R50) and the Villebois Mareuil-Drive, in the rural smallholdings area of Pretoria. Mrs Vermeulen said a bystander gave her a piece of paper with the assaillant’s registration number on it and told her “that man just chased away”. Other eye-witnesses told her that the assailant assaulted her husband twice with his fist, and that her husband had collapsed at once. He was rushed to hospital to undergo surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain. On Tuesday he was operated on again. He’d suffered damage to the brainstem and never regained consciousness. He died on Wednesday April 6 2011 at the Kloof hospital. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, son Johan, four grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters. http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Dood-na-padwoede-20110407
