BLOEMFONTEIN, FS. 72-year-old grandmom Mrs Alette de Beer, who runs an hairdressing salon on her Waterbron smallholding, was stabbed on Saturday-morning by a ‘neat-looking’ black youth who had arrived there begging for a casual job – she felt sorry for him, trusted his scrubbed-up, neat appearance and wanted to help him out. She issued a warning from her hospital bed afterwards: ‘Keep all your doors locked and don’t give an odd-job to any strangers, even when they have honest-seeming, open faces and are neatly-dressed in school uniforms….’

  • She was interviewed in hospital after her ordeal by Jana van der Merwe of Volksblad. She was stabbed by the youth with a stea-knife in each hand – the elderly Afrikaans lady was stabbed repeatedly in her head, left lower leg, right arm and left shoulder while she fought back fiercely. Her numerous wounds had to be stitched up while she was under sedation on the operating table. The youngster had arrived at her smallholding begging her for an odd-job  so she agreed to let hm work in the garden in exchange for an agreed-to amount .When she turned around, he had snuck into her homestead, stolen steak-knives from her kitchen and attacked her in her bedroom, immediately demanding that he give her R300 in cash. She fought back with all her might and managed to push the alarm button – and the howling noise caused the ‘innocent school-child’ to flee. Mrs De Beer, bleeding heavily, jumped into her car and rushed to neighbour Etienne van Vuuren’s smallholding. She was rushed to hospital by her son-in-law Johan van der Walt who met her car enroute. Mrs De Beer, mother of three daughters and grandmother of six, has lived on the smallholding for the past 38 years and was never attacked before. “One must just learn that you cannot trust anyone any more, not even an open-faced, neatly-dressed, innocent-looking school boy,’ she said.  SAPS spokeswoman Lt.col. Annelie Wrensch said no-one was arrested, but the organised-crime unit was investigating the case. –  Interpreted from original Afrikaans article, Volksblad : http://www.volksblad.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Bejaarde-waarsku-na-mesaanval-deur-skoolkind-20110117
