Besieged SA smallholders threaten to ‘shoot to kill armed invaders’ after latest murders rock Pretoria and Bloemfontein
December 30 2010 – BLOEMFONTEIN. The gruesome murder of Bloemspruit smallholder Hennie Viljoen on Monday is the latest of a soaring number of very violent murder- robbery- and rape-attacks targetting the Boer residents on the sprawling smallholdings surrounding Bloemfontein.
It’s a growing pattern: identical problems are also experienced in the rural smallholdings around greater Pretoria, especially Kameeldrift. These working-class Boer smallholders and their families all live in daily fear of their lives. Since June 2010, the record shows that a combined 511 armed-attacks were recorded against ethno-European families, farmers and business people in the Free State and the Transvaal up to December 24 2010.
‘Hire less workers…’ Transvaal Agricultural Union warns
The Transvaal Agricultural union today warned people to ‘hire less workers and become much more wary and alert around their workers’: TAU spokesman Jan Viljoen pointed out that four Zimbabwean workers were arrested for three recent double farm-murders in that province alone. The death toll on the farms and smallholdings has soared to 3,770 by Dec 27 2010. Names, dates, sources
After Viljoen’s murder on December 27, some Bloemspruit residents indicated that they would do anything to defend their families – even shoot to kill any armed intruders threatening them and their families. Residents also are tightening up their security even more and in many regions they are also re-organising their self-defence systems.
Free State leader of the Democratic Alliance Dr Roy Jankielsohn accused the SAPS of ‘ignoring their duties to protect the residents even though they knew of the problem.” On Nov 22 he had already urgently warned Thab Manyoni, MEC in charge of the policing portfolio, detailing the great many incidents of violence targetting the residents and the poor responses from the Bloemspruit SAPS to even the most violent armed crimes.
Bloemhof residents complained in statements submitted with Janielsohn’s Nov 22 letter that whenever they placed emergency calls pleading for help while they were under attack by armed black male gangs, the Bloemspruit police would ‘show up far too late’ to capture the attackers; often claiming that they had a ‘vehicle shortage’. The residents also complained that they received little to none feed-back about the formal incident-charges they lodged at this police station. Manyoni promised Janielsohn last month that ‘these questions would be attended to urgently,’ yet the problems still persist, as the Viljoen-murder showed this week.
On Monday Dec 27 2010, local Boer petrol-station owner Hennie Viljoen was ambushed , stabbed and bludgeoned to death with huge boulders by armed black men who were waiting for him at the entrance to his smallholding at 122 Cypress Drive, Hoëveld at Bloemspruit. Volksblad journalist Vicus Bürger wrote that as Viljoen stepped from his Peugeot 407 to open the entrance gate to the family homestead he was stabbed, attacked with huge rocks and murdered. The attackers tried to use his Peugeot as a getaway car but crashed it and fled on foot. Mr Viljoen is survived by his wife Ciselia and two daughters: Red Cross Hospital clinical technologist Cicelia jr. (23) and Free State student Anette (21).
Bloemspruit cops ‘very uncooperative’ – murder-victim Viljoen’s neighbour Barend Swart.
Bloemspruit resident Barend Swart was heading home with fiancee Marilize Hayward when the couple found Viljoen’s crashed Peugeot lying on its roof shortly after the murderers had crashed it and fled on foot. The couple rushed to the victim’s homestead and found a tragic scene at the gate: Mrs Viljoen, desperately trying to revive her husband with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Swart then helped by massaging his heart. “I realised he was dead but just kept trying,’ the grief-stricken Mrs Viljoen said later. Swart then found Viljoen’s cellphone in the veldt and repeatedly tried to phone the nearby Bloemspruit police station – but only raised them after trying repeatedly. ” And when someone finally answered, the police on the other end claimed that they ‘didn’t know where the smallholding was located,’ he said.http://www.volksblad.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Bloemfonteiner-met-klippe-doodgeslaan-20101228
“Police investigate internally”
FS SAPS spokesman col Motantsi Makhele claimed that ‘the complaints about the poor police-reaction times are investigated internally.” He said a satellite station Sonskyn was established on 14 Oct ‘to remove the pressures on Bloemspruit’.
Viljoen’s death occurred about a month after the murder of Barend Steyn, 73 on 5 November. Residents say that they are plagued by an epidemic of rapes, thefts and break-ins as well as murder-attacks. Interviews with residents such as Stephen Bopheka confirm that the fear was widespread: ‘What happened to Viljoen and Steyn can also happen to me and other Bloemspruit residents,’ he said. Resident Marilize Hayward was terrified of going home at night and feared for her two-year-old son’s Duwan’s safety. Resident Frik Greyling was up in arms and said he would shoot anyone culprit trying to enter his property. Hennie Nieuwenhuizen said the Bloemspruit police are ‘hopelessly incompetent.’ Ms Hayward agreed and said ‘the only solution was to fire the lot of them and get an entirely new crew at that police station”. Even the ANC’s pretend-‘breakaway’ party spokesman Teboho Loate of COPE felt that the soaring violence targetting Bloemspruit residents ‘was worrying’. And Freedom Front leader Abrie Oosthuizen believed that the murders on farms and smallholdings ‘wil not stop until the death-sentence is reinstated for these murderers…’ “Nobody is safe anywhere any more,’ he concluded.
Disenchanted South Africans poke fun at poor physical fitness of the SAPS
South Africans have indeed become so disenchanted with their police-force that they take great pains to photograph them slacking off on duty such as sleeping on the job. Many citizens also poke fun at their obvious lack of physical fitness.. as the following video clip illustrates.
