2010-12-01 An armed black man strolled into their new Faerie Glen, Pretoria rental home while the Afrikaans Kleynhans family was still moving in, pulled his gun and said: “why the f..k did you move here? This neighbourhood is dangerous…’ The family, comprised of granddad Andre, 72, grandson Jehan, 15, and his pregnant 36-year-old aunt Gisela Knispel, were still moving in their packed boxes from their previous abode: a small cottage at the nearby Irene Farm Villages smallholdings. Jehan was in the kitchen unpacking with his aunt when a black man cocked his 9mm pistol at him as he came strolling in with two ‘younger ones’ holding screwdrivers. “I was standing with my cellphone in my hand and pushed it back into my pocket before he could spot it,’ said Jehan.
They robbed his daughter’s beadwork…
Granddad Kleynhans was assaulted with a screwdriver because the old man couldn’t move fast enough for their liking – when ordered to dig out the family jellery. Much good may it do these armed gunmen: “They fled with my daughter’s beadwork. They probably thought it was very valuable,’ said the old man, nursing his head-injury. After they carried out the family’s small TV-set and grabbed the electronic gate’s access-remote, (they obviously plan to come back…) the armed threesome calmly got into a car waiting outside and drove off. The SAPS of Garsfontein are investigating and showed a particularly keen interest in the fingerprints the armed men had left behind on some cigarette butts found outside the bedroom window.
