We reported on 28 October 2010 that unconfirmed reports on the website of the Afrikaner Volks Party claimed that ‘long-simmering racial tensions amongst the pupils at Parys Afrikaans High School in the Free State burst into the open last Thursday in a massive outbreak of physical violence’.
They claimed the ‘ fracas started when some 50 black and white pupils confronted each other in a violent fisticuffs during a break at the schoolgrounds, that one teacher who tried to take a cellphone away from a black male pupil was threatened; and that teachers were reportedly too terrified to interfere. “
Today, we received a brief official confirmation of ‘two incidents of violence’ that day from the Parys High School management in response to our enquiry. The unnamed official also wrote that the cases ‘will be investigated during the week of 1 – 5 November.”(communication below)
The Afrikaner Volksparty’s story related the incidents as follows: “Just outside the schoolgate, black female pupils reportedly organised attack groups – it was alleged that the girls first handed out scissors amongst themselves – and then started surrounding and threatening to kill lone Afrikaans classmates who were chased down by the girls in the schoolgrounds and outside the gates.”
A parent-teacher association member also was reported as saying that the Afrikaans High School was ‘a vulcano which is beginning to spew red-hot lava’. Our attempts to obtain independent confirmation have not yet been successful.
Fearful teachers and pupils reportedly ‘could only look on while white and black pupils engaged in hand-to-hand combat on the schoolgrounds’. It allegedly started when five black pupils jumped on one white Afrikaans pupil at the schoolgrounds and tried to assault him. Shortly afterwards a group of black female pupils – armed with scissors – formed a threatening ring around another Afrikaner Grade-Eight pupil. One teacher was allegedly threatened: she had ordered a black male pupil – who was apparently organising these events from a classroom via his cellphone — to hand her the phone. He threatened her physically and the teacher was forced to leave.
The tension is expected to continue today because an internal hearing is taking place of a black youth, accused of assaulting an Afrikaans girl. Afrikaner parents say that their children’s safety can no longer be guaranteed at any school: “The forced racial-integration policies which the government is forcing on our Afrikaans-language schools are clearly not working,’ said some parents – too fearful to be identified. htp://www.afrikanervolksparty.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4210%3A-hoerskool-parys-in-rasse-oorlog&catid=42%3Aonderwys&Itemid=146&lang=en
