– Discrimination versus racism

According to the Oxford dictionary the word ‘discrimination’ means “recognition and understanding of the difference between one thing and another”. People make distinctions because they value one choice over the other. Freedom does not exist when there is no opportunity to choose between different options.

The ban on discrimination cannot mean that people are not allowed to make distinctions…

In light of the fact that freedom is an essential element of the Western Enlightenment, the ban on discrimination cannot mean that people are not allowed to make distinctions. The ban on discrimination concerns the nature of a particular discrimination and not the principle itself. The Western Enlightenment considers it as just to make distinctions when one’s own interests are served and success is not based on the oppression of others.

• Is a Jew racist because he is Jewish? Judaism is first and foremost a religion based on ethnicity and descent whereby everyone who is of different descent is excluded. Exclusion is in Judaism then discrimination on ethnic grounds. Despite this, Judaism is not illegal. Is it for people allowed to determine with what group they identify or should it be imposed by government? And what identity should people have? Is it racist to exclude others when they also have the ability to form their own group? Every form of association necessarily involves excluding others who do not fit certain criteria.
• If a society accepts freedom of association it needs to accept that people form associations with people they identify and exclude those they don’t.

Diversity is not Apartheid

Discrimination should be illegitimate when people deliberately disadvantage others based on race, religion or sexual orientation. Something should only be outlawed if it is directed at intentionally harming others and not when people decide to choose to be independent of the other.

• It is often incorrectly assumed that making distinctions based on ethnicity is a major threat to a free and multicultural world. However, a multicultural environment is based on the existence of groups that organise themselves based on descent and affinity.
• A multicultural environment cannot exist without making distinctions based on ethnic criteria. The principle of making distinctions based on ethnicity can therefore never be bad in a multicultural environment because it is the foundation of that system, thereby labeling it as ‘good’. In light of the fact that the term ‘discrimination’ is used as a moral judgment to say that the exclusion and prejudices of others based on ethnicity is evil, we can conclude that to make distinctions based on ethnicity in a multicultural environment is not discrimination or racism.

The world is multicultural but an individual country can choose not to be…

It is also important to mention that although the world is multicultural, an individual country can choose not to be. It is legitimate to choose to be a monocultural country as long as other countries also have the ability to develop their culture. In fact, a country that is highly monocultural actually increases the degree of multiculturalism if you take a global perspective. This is due to the fact that when all countries have the same degree of ‘multiculturalism’ every country starts to look the same ending up with a world that has less diversity.

“When Afrikaner groups try to promote their culture and support their people, opponents often attack this activity by claiming that this is a form of Apartheid. Diversity is however not Apartheid. The former implies freedom while the latter is based on oppression.

• The political system of Apartheid is seen as illegitimate because success of one group is based on the loss of another.
• The struggle for a strong and successful Afrikaner culture and people is not Apartheid since it is based on promoting the success of one group (the Afrikaners) without it being based on the loss of others.

Self-determination protects against neo-racism

Undermining of people’s own culture is not left- or right-wing, populist or elitist, but criminal. Liberal multiculturalism often does not revolve around appreciating other cultures, but instead around the undermining of the dominant culture in order to weaken potential competitors and win a privileged position in society. Normative multiculturalism can therefore often be seen as neo-racism whereby this racism is anti-white, anti-Western and anti-European. The multicultural society is a descriptive term, since it is a choice on whether you want to have a public domain consisting of one dominant culture or of several distinct cultures. It is a normative concept and implies political choices. Undermining the Afrikaner culture is therefore a form of neo-racism that can only be countered through a form of self-determination whereby pride in the culture is restored.

• For a people to have self-determination it is necessary that there is solidarity between the members of that people, because otherwise a people cannot exist. This solidarity rises by definition above the solidarity they have with people of another group. Such a distinction does not mean that one is racist. It is up to anyone themselves to decide the group to which one wishes to belong and on the basis of which characteristics this group is defined. These characteristics can include cultural, social and heritable factors. As long as the success of the group that is formed in such a way is not the result of the oppression and exclusion of other persons and groups then such a classification is legitimate. When a tribe in the Amazon claims rights by invoking their ethnicity and the fact that they have lived in the area for many centuries, they are not racist. It is not up to someone else to decide on what characteristics you want to form a group, because that would deny the principle of self-determination and is therefore a colonial attitude that causes many indigenous groups to be unable to legally organize themselves against their marginalization.

For example, ‘race’ is not a social construction but a biological construction that is deliberately interpreted incorrectly according to the interests of those in power. The 19th century scientific classification of humanity in different races was aimed at legitimizing the positions of power whereby Europeans stood at the top. Activists have tried to undermine this reasoning by presenting race as a social construction.

• The past is hereby ridiculed by pointing out that there are no pure races and that the entire concept was thus wrong.

  However, purity is not applicable to a biological organism and therefore not to humans nor to nature, but that does not mean that race is a social construct. The hierarchical classification of the world on the basis of ethnicity was a social construction, not the idea of race itself.

• In recent decades, the scientific community, however, has gone too far in their activism and the current position is as unscientific as that of the 19th century to a level where the position is again a form of colonialism.

Solidarity is the removal of injustice

Solidarity between people is only possible if the success of one does not come at the expense of the other. Solidarity depends on justice. Solidarity cannot be imposed because then it is oppression. Genuine solidarity is the removal of injustice. Such injustice consists of obstructions that disadvantage people in pursuing their survival. When people are hindered in their pursuit to survive they will be unable to get a respected position in society which causes them to become vindictive whereby distance between people is created. People will then work against each other which leads to an increasingly rapid disintegration. This makes the community less prosperous and therefore less able to provide success. If you cannot become successful, then you are a loser and no-one wants to be a loser or part of a losing team. “Being successful” should be understood as the ability to ensure your chances of survival (and that of your children, and so on). When people get the feeling that the group they belong to is a losing team then they will switch their loyalty instantly and try to become part of another, winning group. Only if the individual interests for survival are deemed equivalent for all members of the group, can there be genuine and true solidarity. Such an alignment of interests does not mean that everyone in all respects needs to make the same choices. Western culture has the concept of tolerance that is based on the insight that people belonging to a particular group have different capabilities from each other and that this can be to the benefit of everyone. There is thus a win-win situation.

When a call for self-determination is present there is by definition, a lack of solidarity within (that) society:

When a call for self-determination is present then there is by definition a lack of solidarity within society. People’s interests are then violated by those in power and by others exposed to a similar oppression. As a result, the survival of people is in jeopardy. In response, people try to create solidarity where it has disappeared. To have freedom, it is always necessary to have solidarity between people.

“Today, the right to self-determination is interpreted as a right to determine one’s own political future whereby in exceptional situations this could lead to an independent state. Self-determination therefore does not automatically mean that one has a right to full independence.

• The exceptional situations in which the right to self-determination does lead to a right to independence include situations where there are gross human rights violations and whereby the future survival of the population is threatened. A people can only call on the right to independence if it is excluded from political participation, seriously oppressed and its survival is threatened. “

“On the 23^rd December 1985, I was with my Father, photo journalist Jo Toerien, in his studio in Amanzimtoti.  It was a hot summer’s  day, I was an 18 years old enjoying the coolness of the air-conditioned studio, casually chatting to him about an upcoming assignment.  I often accompanied my dad on some of his photo shoots. Our laughing and bantering was suddenly interrupted by a profound and heavy thud that made the windows shudder. Everything stood still, we both looked at each other bewildered and immediately his desk phone rang. It was brief conversation; he went white in the face,  slammed the phone down, grabbed his camera bag and bolted over to the Sanlam Shopping Centre.

“You  could already see the grey smoke enveloping the shopping mall and billowing into the streets.  He dashed off in between the crowds and the chaos, the local police were trying to cordon off the road and do crowd control; they knew him well and ushered him through. He recalls the odd smells, a mixture of wet cement and iron and almost like that smell you encounter on Guy Fawkes day. There was screaming, crying, the wailing of the engines of fire trucks, the voices that shouted and echoed off the walls.

“The blast had created a zig-zag effect on the internal structure. Then the reality of it all hit ….Bomb? what bomb, why?…. there were sheets of glass, bits of metal, his Nikon camera flashing into the darkness of the passages.

People were sliding in the blood…

“The blood lay everywhere, people were sliding in it. The smell of it was nauseating.  People were galvanized into action as they started to help others. 

“This was the day the name African National Congress became a name synonymous with cowardice, hatred and terrorism.   The people of this small coastal town’s reverie was knocked senseless that day. Blacks, whites, Indians and coloureds alike were affected by the senseless brutality.  This sickening act of the ANC did not encourage people to listen to their plight, instead it turned people against them, turned them into nothing but common criminals who felt nothing to murder innocent women and children.

• Recently, the current ANC government, incited further hatred in the people of this once glittering jewel of the south coast by renaming a main road — Kingsway Road in Amanzimtoti — after the bomber to “Andrew Zondo Road”.  This 19 year old ANC militant member, was thankfully hung on the 9^th September 1986.

The photos taken by my Father will always remind us of our bloody history and of the calibre of the men who now run this country.” (*Name withheld).

Background details on Amanzimtoti bomb – testimony and aftermath:

The Amanzimtoti bomb killed three small Afrikaner children, namely Willem Arie van Wyk 2; Isabella Margretha van Wyk 5, and eight-year-old Johan Smit.   Two white women were also killed: Mrs Irma Bencini 48 and Anna Shearer, 43. Sixty-one people were injured: many were blinded and left permanently disabled. It’s not on record how many of those injured victims have since succumbed from their injuries.

The limpet mine had been placed in a refuse bin outside the Sanlam shopping centre. Most of the victims were holidaymakers doing last minute Christmas shopping. The shopping centre was very crowded.

• Sibusiso Andrew Zondo (19) was arrested in February 1986. Two other Umkhonto We Sizwe (MK, Spear of the Nation) male members thought also to have been involved in the bombing, Phumezo Nxiweni (20) and Sipho Stanley Bhila (31), were killed by the police during a shoot-out while they were trying to arrest them.

• The state’s main witness in the case, a Mofokeng, told the court that he had provided the limpet mine and accompanied Zondo, 19,  to the shopping centre. Mofokeng claimed that the explosion was in retaliation for the South African security forces’ raid on Maseru Lesotho four days earlier, in which nine people were killed. Zondo, who admitted his role in the bombing at his trial, was convicted and given five death sentences. He was executed on 9 September 1986. He refused to apply for an appeal against his death sentence.

• In her statement to the Commission, Zondo’s mother said that Zondo had told his parents when he was in matric that he would leave the country when he finished school, as he was ‘fed up with the system’. His parents never saw him again, but he contacted them briefly a week before his arrest. She said that people leaving his memorial service in KwaMashu were attacked and two children killed. Zondo’s brother was seriously assaulted and subsequently suffered from epilepsy, which finally led to his death.

Johan Smit 8, is a martyr, said his father Cornelius to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission

Mr Cornelius Smit, whose little son Johan died in the explosion, told the TR-Commission that “he saw his son as a martyr whose death had helped usher in the new South Africa“. [JB00193/02/PS].

Other victims of the explosion who made statements to the Commission included Mr Ian Shearer [KZN/NNN/522/DN] whose wife, Anna was killed; and Ms Hluphekile Nkabinde [JB0020/03VT] who was taking her employer’s two-year-old son, Willem van Wyk for a walk when the bomb exploded, killing the child and injuring her [KZN/NG/010/DN]. • Mandela clan’s massive wealth remains mostly hidden from public eye in some 24 trusts

2013-04-28 By a Beeld newspaper research team:  “Ex-pres Nelson Mandela’s direct descendants live in South Africa’s wealthiest neighborhoods and own business interests in many dozens of successful companies. It’s practically impossible to trace the exact extent of the Mandela Family Wealth because of the intricate web of trusts in which their wealth is kept hidden from the public eye.

The lack of public documentation makes this research task exceedingly difficult. However — write Beeld newspaper’s researchers Andrew Trench, Tanduxolo Jika and Jeanne van der Merwe –  the most recognizably-wealthy ‘Mandela Entrepreneurs’ are granddaughters Zaziwe and Zamaswazi (Swati) Dlamini, who are in the public eye with a reality-TV programme and a Mandela-clothing range.

Grandson Zondwa Mandela also hit the headlines recently due to his involvement – with Pres Jacob Zuma’s grandson Khulubuse Zuma – in the controversialm, now totally destroyed Aurora Gold Mine. Huge sums running into the many millions were paid to liquidators and directors while the mine-workers suffered:  (they were not receiving their salaries for months on end, and survived only with their families because they received food-aid from Helping Hand, the charity branch of Solidarity trade union.)

The South African Company Registry shows that the Mandela children and grandchildren have been and/or are involved over the past two decades in some 200 companies across a wide spectrum of sectors: property, investment, railway-engineering, minerals, medical firms, fashion and entertainment. The children and grandchildren of the Mandela clan are currently actively engaged/involved in more than 110 companies, the registration records show.

Their massive wealth is hidden inside a network of at least 24 trusts drawn up by the family’s ex-lawyer Ismail Ayob. Some of these trusts own various wealthy properties in some of Johannesburg’s most luxurious neighbourhoods.

- Makaziwe Mandela ‘s Hyde Park mansion, occupying 3,575m2 is registered in the ownership of the Makaziwe M-trust – according to the latest valuation roll it’s worth some R13,6 million.

- Mandela’s grandson Ndaba Mandela provides his domicile at his Houghton property – valued at R4,5 million and owned by the Iterele Investment Corporation: a company in which Mandela lawyers George Bizos and Bally Chuene are the directors.

- Tukwini Mandela owns a R1,7 million property in Pretoria which is registered in her own name.

- His daughter’s Zindzi Mandela Family-trust also owns a property of R2million in Houghton.

- Makaziwe – Mandela’s oldest surviving daughter – is an active director in 16 companies – amongst those the South Africa affiliate of the Swiss multinational food giant Nestlé, a shopping centre in Kimberley NC,  two railway-engineering companies and four other companies which appear to be engaged in mineral-explorations.

   Makaziwe Mandela has held directorships of 40 companies since the mid-1990s.

- Mandela’s daughter Zenani Dlamini — currently the ambassador in Argentina — holds nine directorships in companies.  She was also a co-director of a company together with Clinton Nassif – a man linked to the murder of SA mining-magnate Brett Kebble.

- Zondwa Mandela, Khulubuse Zuma and President Jacob Zuma ‘s lawyer Michael Hulley  are co-directors in Labat Africa. Those three also at one stage held directorships together in the ill-fated Aurora gold-mine but have resigned from those posts.

- Granddaughter Nandi Mandela is a co-director in the town-planning company Linda Masinga & Associates – which according to its website completed many contractors for KwaZulu-Natal municipalities.

- Grandson Kweku Mandela is an ex-director of a movie company which has produced many shows for DStv’s Comedy Central channel.

- His nephew Ndaba Mandela is a director in a Johannesburg entertainment company.

Nelson Mandela himself does not appear to hold many assets in his own name, reports Beeld newspaper:

Last year the Nelson Mandela Foundation paid R2,9million to ‘The Founder’, only slightly more than the previous year’s R2,8 million.

As a former South African president he also receives a lifelong presidential salary.

David “Mdavo’  Bullard (twitter @lunchout2) didn’t exactly show his ‘sensitive side’ when he jumped feet-first into a verbal cock-fight between “Outraged English-speaking White Males” versus “Wimmen Activists” rape survivors  on Twitter. The twitter-row erupted after columnist/journalist Ivo Vegter (below) defended  the use of the word “rape” by Free Market Foundation executive director Leon Louw  — when he described the way in which government gets businesses to agree to absurd new legislation: in this case the controversial Business Licensing Bill: (below)

Thanks to pernicious campaigns like the propagandist, money-spinning “Lead SA” –those of us who are a mite critical of the current administration are no longer permitted to speak our thoughts, however sensible they may be. As poor Ivo Vegter found out last week when he posted a piece on the Daily Maverick website defending the use of “rape” as used by Free Market Foundation executive director Leon Louw in an opinion piece he had written for BizDay.  — Louw had used gang rape as a metaphor for how governments get business to agree to absurd new legislation, in this case the controversial Business Licensing Bill. He made it quite clear that he was referring to ‘regulatory gang rape’.

Before you could say Jimmy Savile the wrath of the entire feminist/activist/professional victim movement was upon him. The Twittersphere was full of swivel eyed lunacy and poor Louw apparently received a letter from 40 outraged (what else?) wimmin activists presumably demanding an apology and refusing to accept the use of the word “rape” to mean anything other than the violation of a woman against her will. – - So bad luck Alexander Pope.

“Louw was his usual decent self and discussed the problem with the complainants but faced with 40 spitting harridans he probably had no option. Ivo Vegter then wrote his piece and got into even more trouble for trying to defend Louw’s freedom of speech. The favoured tactic of the loony left is to drown out civilised discourse and resort to insult.

• One particularly poisonous comment was from Charlene Smith, an ex SA struggle journalist who has pushed off to live in the US of A where she could dispense her dubious wisdom in comparative safety. Her contribution was thus :
• “Ivo Vegter has always been a rather boring little man. The sort who resorts to adolescent shock tactics-dropping his pants or someone else’s-to get attention away from the fact that he is a dull writer. I suspect he has small dick syndrome”.

  Bullard writes: “Hardly impressive stuff from someone who claims on her Facebook page to be a multi award winning journalist. Such was the level of debate from the outraged wimmin activist crowd. Having worked briefly with Vegter on “The Maverick” magazine I can vouch for the fact that he is neither boring nor short and that his writing is far from dull. In fact, I would recommend him over me any day if you want a decent bit of analysis. Of course, his views on fracking are a bit suspect but nobody’s perfect. As to his dick….well I haven’t played squash with him so I am in no position to comment.

So what is this all about once the tear gas and smoke has cleared? Well it sure as hell aint about rape being an awful and far too common occurrence in SA. It’s all about a group of wimmin victims who believe their rights trump everybody else’s. How dare we use a word that might possibly offend a sensitive woman?  In future Mr Louw kindly send your copy to be pre approved by the Wimmin’s Activists and they’ll tell you what you can say – you cheeky misogynist you.

And of course it’s about people who lead rather drab and uneventful lives demanding and getting a bit of media attention. LOONY LEFTISM IS CREEPING ACROSS THE LAND…

But I’m afraid that loony leftism is creeping across the land and thanks to social media, idiots who wouldn’t otherwise have their voices heard are able to muster reinforcements on Twitter and howl down any point of view with which they happen to disagree. Which is why it’s important to expose them as the uncouth charlatans they are. To do otherwise is to let the howling mob win the day.

Massive population growth puts strain on SA clean-water supplies, ability to produce sufficient food for local consumption:

By Adriana Stuijt, Censorbugbear Reports: June 15 2013  – The UN has drastically revised its estimates of the world population upwards by eight percent – to 11 billion people by the year 2100. And this upwards revision is mainly due to the higher than expected fertility rates in eight African countries headed by Nigeria. South Africa’s population could reach as high as 92million by 2100 from its current 51-million. The revised 2012 UN report predicts that by far the largest expected increase is in Nigeria, projected to increase by 730million people –  from 184million now to 914million in 2100. The African continent could have as many as 4.2billion people by 2100.

Eight of the top ten estimated increases are in Africa, with India in second place. The United States is eighth, with an expected increase of 146million, or 46 percent, from 316million now to 462million in 2100. In fact Nigeria’s population could surpass that of the United States by 2050. “The largest projected decline is in China, expected to decrease by about 300million, from 1.4billion now to 1.1billion in 2100.

How did India and Indonesia reduce their fertility rates?

Asked how populous countries such as India and Indonesia had been able to reduce their fertility rates, he said “those Governments had been working to provide family planning services, and individuals, when given the choice about their own fertility, tended to respond in ways that reduced population growth.”

The UN changed its predictions – particularly for Africa — due to new statistical methods by a group at the University of Washington headed by Prof. Raftery in collaboration with the UN Population Division.

• Raftery confirmed this, writing to Censorbugbear Reports that the UN’s 4.2billion estimate is ‘merely a best guess’ – their model gives a ‘confidence interval for the population of Africa by 2100 from 3.2billion to 5.5.billon.  He wrote me: “I should also emphasize that there is considerable uncertainty about population projections this far out into the future, for many  reasons, including the ones that you mentioned (.. I asked him about factors such as the current very rapid, irreversable water pollution; and the uncontrolled, massive migration patterns into South Africa from the rest of Africa.. )

Raftery:  ” Also, our methods are based on historical experience, and implicitly assume, for example, that states will continue to provide family planning facilities. The fertility decline in Africa has slowed down or stalled to a larger extent than we previously predicted, and as a result the African population will go up,” he wrote. “Currently, the total population of the African continent is around 1.1-billion people. The report predicts that this number may rise to as high as 4.2billion by the year 2100…”

Who can feed them all… and what will this massive population growth to SA’s already stressed environment and its water?

Censorbugbear Reports has published many previous reports on the growing stress on the SA environment due to its rapid population growth over the years. This stress is mainly caused by the huge migratory pattern from the rest of southern Africa into South Africa since 1994, with estimates of destitute African migrants settling in South Africa now ranging from 8million to 15million people. The current South African population — without these foreign migrants — now is estimated to be 51-million people. Many of these migrants are young, child-bearing age people who migrate from Nigeria, Mozambique, Kenya, Zimbabwe and even from as far afield as Somalia and Ethiopia. They travel to South Africa to obtain better access to jobs, food supplies, better medical care and an education for their children.

                 - Important  key factors in rapid population growth have always been the access to enough local, low-cost food and clean, sufficient water.

These positive growth-factors above (still) remain higher in South Africa than in many other African countries. S.A. still has sufficient local production of affordable food from its commercial farming community – although for the first time -  this year the country had to import about half of all its food-needs. About 12,000 commercial farmers in SA still produce the other half – with the country’s 1,2million subsistence farmers producing mostly for their own consumption and taking very little to local markets.

Filthy, poisoned, sewerage-polluted irrigation water now only water-resource available for SA farmers:

In March 2012. Business Report warned that the water pollution caused by Mpumnalanga mines threatened to cause a major countrywide food crisis. Louw Steytler of Grain SA said they were ‘deeply concerned as Mpumalanga was responsible for a large part of South Africa’s food supply. This province is the bread basket of the country.. The government needs to give this problem urgent attention.”

Nigel Adams, head of the Water Affairs department’s Blue Scorpions, said his department could not solve the issue alone. Water Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said in a written reply to a DA parliamentary question recently that 53 mines were operating in the country without a water licence, of which 18 were in Mpumalanga. Research by the University of the Witwatersrand’s Professor Terence McCarthy showed that even if mining companies attempted to rehabilitate previously mined land, harvest yields remained weak. http://www.bizcommunity.com/Article/196/475/72808.html

By 2008 the Transvaal Agricultural Union already started warning: “Filthy, poisoned, sewerage-polluted irrigation water is the only water-resource now available for our farmers’ irrigation of their crops.’ Its president Ben Marais described the situation as a ‘water-pollution time-bomb’. He noted that “while less than one percent of the entire land-surface of South Africa is used for irrigated crop-farming – these few remaining commercial farmers also supply all the produce markets in the country. “

• Its NorthWest regional chairman Wilhelm Roché said in 2008 that ‘farmers are now forced to pay water-taxes for dangerously-polluted water which is actually destroying their livelihood – they are paying for their own downfall.’ The sixty smallfarmers raise peppers, tomatoes, onions and cabbages for the produce markets in the cities — and are totally reliant on the Lindleyspoort Dam’s water supply. They can’t irrigate their crops any more – it is just become too dangerous, they warn.

Livestock dying of human-measle infections due to human sewage runoffs from burgeoning squatter camps around all the cities

• Elands River water and Lindleyspoort Dam poisoned: Cattle-farmers at Swartruggens, Koster and Derby in 2008 reported that they had to keep their livestock away from the adjacent Elands River water at the Lindleyspoort dam – because they would die if they drank it: it was too poisonous. Some of the livestock were even reportedly infected with human measles because of the raw-sewerage in the Elands River. Independent water-tests by an international expert showed such dangerous levels of human faecal matter and heavy-metals that it was considered totally unsafe for human- and animal consumption. Bird-watchers also confirmed widespread deaths among the birdlife reliant on these water-resources that year.

• Loskop Dam, Olifants River:

• Mpumalanga provincial chairman Henry Geldenhuys said at the time that ” any farmers who solely relied on irrigation water from the Loskop dam – also fed by the Olifants River — for their survival, were facing serious problems. The water in this dam — which was built as an irrigation dam only was by then also being tapped for human consumption — was ‘polluted heavily with human waste and industrial poison from local municipal waste-runoffs”. And the detected high levels of heavy metals and high-acidity in this water also originated straight from the local coal-mines, he said.

• Citrus, grape and maize farmers — between Marble Hall and Groblersdal — hardest hit.

• “We don’t know when the pollution bomb will explode, but it’s already good-night for these farmers’, Geldenhuys warned three years ago.

• Orange River basin: The export-grape farmers along the Orange River basin, which feeds from the heavily-polluted Vaal River — an area of about 300km — it was being warned, were also facing collapse.  “The raw sewerage runoff in these rivers has now percolated down to the ground-water – and the wells in this region were becoming ‘far too dangerous for human and animal consumption. “

Murdered Poor Afrikaner singer Jeandre Van Rensburg Only Music Video

June 10 2013 – The SAPS in Springs released a picture of “Ali”, a Pakistani citizen sought for questioning in connection with the murder of impoverished Afrikaner singer Jeandre Van Rensburg, 19, on May 29 2013 at a local nightclub. The youth, who sang for pocket money in local night clubs – usually accompanied by his father — was found with his throat sliced through in a toilet of a club. He died in his father’s arms. Allegedly there had been death threats against the youth several weeks before he was killed. He told the family he had also been accosted a few weeks before his death by ‘five coloured men’.  There are two widely different media versions of this event.  His mother  Rozanne van Rensburg and others say that Van Rensburg was contacted by people in Pretoria who wanted to meet him ‘for a surprise party’. When he arrived — he and his father Jannie went to the venue together — the men who had arranged to meet him there apparently did not show up. So instead Juandre and his dad sat in the strip club – where he often sang for tip-money – drinking a few beers. At one stage Juandre said he had to go to the toilet and his father went with him. The two men had kidded with each other ‘talking nonsense’ which each standing in different stalls. Then Jannie went out leaving Juandre still standing at a stall. As he went out he saw a man he referred to as an ‘Asian’ go inside the toilet where Juandre was alone inside. This man, he knew as ‘Ali’ and frequented the club, was inside ‘not for very long, not long enough to go to the toilet,’ the father noted. Then other people went inside the toilet and almost immediately ran out again, saying there was ‘much blood’. The man named Ali had by then apparently left the club. Juandre’s father Jannie rushed inside and found his son sprawled on the floor, with his throat cut. According to the description his son’s throat was cut by someone who approached him from behind. Juandre was still alive, and spoke to his dad who held him while waiting for emergency services to arrive. His son apparently told him “I am thirsty and I cannot feel my legs any more.’ Emergency services arrived very quickly and had apparently still found him alive, but he died shortly thereafter before he could be loaded into the ambulance. His mom, Mrs Van Rensburg said: “He knew he was going to be killed.” Juandre had remained at the club with his father also to earn some extra money and received R300 in tips for singing that night, she said in the telephone interview. The SAPS is not investigating a ‘robbery’,  only a murder.

• The second version was published in Beeld newspaper on May 31 — indicating that the young singer was killed in the toilet of the Cockpit club in Springs. His throat was cut. A Pakistani man referred to as ‘Ali’ had followed Van Rensburg to the toilet and had then left alone, Beeld reported. “People” then found Van Rensburg with his throat cut inside the toilet. Rustenburg – police case file Nr CAS691/1/2013:  On Feb 15 2013 Tom Hollamby wrote on the Boere Krisis Aksie facebook page that the SAPS in #Rustenburg are investigating a gang rape of an (white) man by six (black) males near the Mooinooi region “after he could not give them any cash”. This incident was reported to the police on Friday Feb 10 2013. Initially the police in Rustenburg tried to cover up the case, denying that the gangrape had taken place at all. However when confronted with the case number their provincial spokesman confirmed that they were investigating six rape-charges; and that victim had been treated at the local hospital. They would not provide the ethnic-identity of the victim nor the suspects. There have been no arrests. The victim was given antiretroviral medication to prevent transfer of the HIV-AIDS virus.  He had been hitchhiking to his job in Rustenburg from Kroondal about 5km away when a white Toyota Hilux-bakkie (farm vehicle) containing six (black) men offered to give him a ride according to Boere Krisis Aksie.  However instead of dropping him off near his home, they drove with him into the veld where they demanded cash – “but the man had no money”, said SAPS Brigadier Thulani Ngubane Ngubane. “The man claims he was injected with some kind of drug, a plastic bag was pulled over his head, he was raped by each of the men, and then dropped in the veld. He was taken to the Rustenburg hospital for treatment.” Ngubane confirmed that the man has lodged six charges of rape. Nobody was arrested.  (The initial report on BKA said that seven men had been involved in the gangrape. )

2010-06-03 Tom de Wet VIRGINIA. – The gruesome cruelties suffered by the murdered Miss Helen Lotter, 57, and her mother Alice became very clear when coroner Dr Horst Bumba’s report to the Welkom High Court showed that Helen Lotter’s cervix and uterus were ‘missing’ and that her death was caused by ‘sharp trauma and injuries to her lower body’ incurred during the attack against the two Afrikaner women in their Allenridge, Free State farm house on March 6 2010.

The old Afrikaner woman’s dying statement to Captain Koos Venter, the police officer who had found the mortally-wounded mother and daughter implicated the gardener as one of the men who assaulted them.  Just before she died,  the mortally-wounded Alice had told investigating SAPS captain Koos Venter that she and her daughter Alice were tortured by a group of men headed by their gardener, Joseph (Hlongwane, 22) – and had pointed  the policeman to the worker’s personal details which she kept inside her passport. Hlongwane was also directly linked to the murders of the two frail women by fingerprints lifted from the crime-scene by forensic experts The e mother’s last words to the Afrikaner policeman were “Thank the Lord that you care for us and that we can hide with you…’’ Alice Lotter died shortly after her arrival at hospital, her daughter Helen died several days later. 

Both women were ‘extensively mutilated’. This testimony was delivered by Capt Venter at the High Court trial before judge S P B Hancke in Welkom, Free State of the Lotter woman’s gardener Joseph Hlongwane, 22 and his co-accused Joseph Khumalo, 21. They deny all the charges – three murders, one house-breakin with the intend to commit robbery; and aggravated robbery. They deny all the charges. The name of the third-murder victim was not mentioned in this news report in Volksblad.

The Afrikaner policeman, who has 31 years of experience, testified that the scene of women’s torture-murders was among ‘the cruellest crimes he had ever witnessed in his career.’ The two Free State Boer women’ murders on March 6 2009 – Helen Lotter’s breasts were also partially cut off and broken bottle-shards were inserted in her vagina and anus as part of the extensive torture she and her mother Alice had endured  –  caused  deep anger amongst the Afrikaner/Boer community.  Information submitted by police members to the news media shortly after the murder also was that the words ‘Kill the Boer’ had been daubed in the women’s blood on the farmhouse walls.

Shortly before he himself was also murdered in April 2010 – hacked to death so brutally that he was nearly unrecognisable –  ailing Ventersdorp farmer Eugene Terre’Blanche, leader of the now defunct Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB),  also referred to the extreme cruelty of the Lotter women’s torture-murders in media interviews. Terre’Blanche led peaceful protest actions at the Odendaalsrust law courts when the suspects made their first remand appearances. The Boer protestors demanded that the murderers be hanged – and had also carried out shockingly graphic re-enactments depicting the exact way in which the Lotter women had been put to death. Terre’Blanche was amongst the peaceful protestors at the Odendaalsrust law courts when the suspects had made their first remand appearances and applied for bail in April 2009.

Frederick Olivier 19 dies in SAPS cell – police claims he ‘hanged himself’ but cannot explain the multiple bruises on his face: Westonaria

APR52011 Westonaria SAPS station. Frederick Olivier, a young Afrikaner man who was looking forward to his hoped-for first job at the local gold-mine, was arrested on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, allegedly when ‘police received a complaint of disturbing the peace.’ Police claimed he ‘hanged himself.’He was dumped in the holding cells of Westonaria police station for ‘public drunkenness’, said constable Lienkie Lefekane ‘for the obligatory four-hour drying out period. No blood tests were taken to prove that the young Afrikaner had actually been drunk. Olivier, claimed Lefekane, was then “discovered hanging in his cell when police officers checked on him.”  The police did not say whether Olivier was in the cell alone that night. According to Olivier’s father Ollie, this version of events makes no sense. His son had bruises on his face which looked as if he had been beaten up. He didn’t have those bruises when he was taken into custody by the Westonaria police.  “My son had a bright future ahead of him,” says Olivier. “He was hopeful of getting a job on the mine, where he recently applied, and was supposed to get engaged in September. Why would he do something like this?” Olivier has his suspicions about his son’s death in custody. “I have photographs of my son in his casket. He looks as if he’s been beaten up. He had no mark on his face when he was arrested.” Meanwhile, Lefekane insists that there was “nothing untoward regarding this case. He was arrested for drunkenness, and he committed suicide by hanging himself in his cell”said Lefekane.

The TV programme Third Degree, broadcast by ETV in South Africa, showed these pictures of the late Mr Brown who was arrested at the Shoprite supermarket in Kriel – for ‘taking a chocolate bar without paying for it’.  Ryan wrote: “The old man was assaulted,  beaten and sprayed with pepper spray by the police officers who arrested him without any probable course for their behavior towards him – the old man did not resist arrest and the police officers were never in any danger from him at any stage. This old man did not know he was doing anything wrong because he was an Alzheimer’s sufferer – his doctor said his physical health was good, but he did suffer from Alzheimer. “After his arrest, his civil rights were also violated  because he had nobody to assist him and his right to a phone call was not presented to him otherwise he could have been assisted by a family member or attorney. “He died within  four hours of custody at the Kriel police station . Mrs. Swanepoel told the Pietermaritzburg High Court that her former neighbour Mrs Sheryl Cwele had personally assured her and her husband that daughter Tessa Beetge, would be safe overseas. “After Sheryl put my husband’s and my mind at rest, we agreed. We didn’t suspect anything. We were happy Tessa was going overseas. It would be her first trip. She looked at it as a way of seeing the world. It was a trip that neither her mum nor dad had been on.” Another State-witness, Charmaine Moss, also is expected to testify to having a similar experience.The court heard that Cwele had organised an overseas job for her which would see her getting free travel, free accommodation, free clothing and 1,000 British Pounds. Mrs Swanepoel said that during a meeting at Cwele’s office at the Hibiscus Coast Municipality in Uvongo, her daughter had been told she would do “administrative work” in London. Mrs Cwele allegedly told the daughter and the mother — Beetge and Swanepoel — that she “had decided to organise the job for Beetge because she (Sheryl) was tired of travelling overseas.” The Minister’s wife had allegedly given Beetge R500 for an air ticket from Durban International Airport to Johannesburg. Beetge had been picked up at the Johannesburg international airport by Nabolisa and his wife, only identified as Nomsa, before she left the country, the court heard. “She was very excited. It was her first trip out of the country. She took it as an opportunity to see the world.” Tessa Beetge left the country on May 20, 2008.”When she left South Africa she landed in JF Kennedy Airport and she moved on to Peru,” she said. Swanepoel said her daughter had contacted her after her arrest in Brazil. It was not revealed in court how she ended up in Brazil. Beetge was supposed to come back on June 4, 2008, but she did not because “she was always told the planes were full”, said Swanepoel. “She told me that she was getting different excuse.” The State alleged that Cwele and Nabolisa conspired to recruit the two white SA women as unknowing drug mules. Beetge is currently serving an eight-year jail sentence in Sao Paulo, Brazil, after 10kg of raw cocaine was found in her luggage. Cwele and Nabolisa were arrested in January this year and face three charges –dealing or conspiring to deal in drugs; procuring Moss to collect drugs in Turkey; and procuring Beetge to smuggle 10kg of cocaine from South America.

Hall said: the issue is the fact that “an arresting officer refused to identify herself, then struck me twice when I tried to photograph her lapel badge.“ Hall said he was devastated, and laid a charge of assault against the police-woman.“Nobody was in control there. The (police) inspector told me to f*** off at least three times, and I intend opening a case and also reporting this to the Independent Complaints Directorate in the hope this will be escalated as high as possible.” Melanie Hall said she was horrified by the assault. “You feel so helpless. The Afrikaners had firm alibis that they had been elsewhere when the alleged murder of the teen had taken place, the magistrate noted. Meanwhile these six Afrikaner men and women were publicly reviled andvery deliberately demonised by the police propaganda – who named them even before they were charged and described them as ‘criminal white racists’, with the local ANC-members holding heated demonstrations outside the courtroom. • How important is it for the family of murder-victims whose bodies were never found, to find out the truth?
• These authors wrote in their paper at the Traumatic Stress in South Africa conference in January 1999′: “How does testifying at hearings relate to feelings of the uncanny and liminality?S peaking at public hearings like those of the SA Truth and Reconciliation Commission can break an enforced silence. (It can) represent a point of closure and transition in the grieving process through interacting with the national symbolic process of the TRC. The widow (…)  leaves behind her grieving phase, shedding the symbols of her liminality. In its reparations policy (which may include personal monetary reparation and symbolic forms like tombstones or monuments), the TRC creates (d) possibilities for the internalisation of loss and Freud’s work of mourning (trauerarbeit) that does not exist through legal channels. Did Susan van der Merwe ‘find closure’ at the TRC? It seems not: she never was able to bury her murdered husband’s body…

   “One case which demonstrates a survivor’s experience of uncertainty and her quest to resolve liminality through legal and TRC channels is that of Susan van der Merwe of Potchefstroom, a teacher and mother of five (traumatised) children. Susan van der Merwe reported at the TRC hearings in Klerksdorp in September 1996 the same kinds of deep uncertainty (as documented by Suarez for victims in Argentina:” ‘my whole life was then an uncertainty … and this uncertainty hung over us like a dark cloud. She said at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearing in Klerksdorp on 23 September 1996:

” At the beginning of 1979, the two children wanted to go and reregister at the university but the bank manager informed me that I did not have any security. The circumstances were that I was completely dependent on my husband. He ran on the financial matters … . It never occurred to me that because of the way in which my husband had died, that if there were any funds available from him, that it would have been taken away from me because we were not married in community of property. Prior to the TRC the case was investigated by the South African security police. Four years later, in 1982, the Supreme Court established the events around the farmer’s disappearance. “Through the evidence of a police informer ‘Mr. X’, the court heard how four umkhonto we sizwe (MK, Spear of the Nation, the ‘military wing’ of the communist ANC), thirty of their ‘combatants’ had been walking along the road to Thabazimbi, when Mr van der Merwe stopped and offered them a lift to the next town. “Once in the car, the MK “cadres” pulled out guns and forced the farmer to drive in the opposite direction and they used his car to transport goods. They then walked (the unarmed) Mr. Van der Merwe out into the bush and executed him, and drove his car to the border. “One MK ‘cadre’ led police to the scene, but the body was never found. For the family of the farmer, the court case resolved only some of their questions:

• She testified: “After these findings, the Supreme court certified my husband as dead, and this left my children in another vacuum of uncertainty. Why was such a horrendous deed done to my husband which cost him his life? For what purpose, what were they hoping to achieve by that?’

ADV POTGIETER: Thank you, Dr Randera. Good morning, ma’am. Welcome here. I would like you to relax and there is absolutely nothing to worry about. The evidence which you will be giving is about the disappearance of your husband, Mr Van der Merwe in 1978. Is that correct?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes.

ADV POTGIETER: Just before you tell us about the disappearance itself, maybe I could put a few questions to you, just to get an idea of your personal circumstances. You are currently living in Potchefstroom, is that correct?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, at the moment I live in Potchefstroom.

ADV POTGIETER: I wonder if you cannot move the microphone a bit closer to you, to enable us to hear, because we can’t all hear you very well if you don’t speak into the microphone.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Is that better?

ADV POTGIETER: Yes, that is a bit better, thank you. We were saying that you are currently residing in Potchefstroom. Is that correct?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes.

ADV POTGIETER: But in 1978 at the time when your husband disappeared, you were living in the Thabazimbi region.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, we lived in that region. The regions are so close to each other, because I was teaching at Swartklip.

ADV POTGIETER: And what was your husband doing?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: At the time we were living in Swartklip.

I have got it all written down in my statement.

ADV POTGIETER: Yes, but I would like you to repeat it in your evidence so that we can hear about the background and so that the audience can hear your evidence and your story. Once again, you will attempt to speak into the microphone. Come as close to the microphone as possible.

You have five children from your marriage to Mr Van der Merwe. Is that correct?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, that is right.

ADV POTGIETER: Are they all over the age of minority?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: The eldest was 21, my son was 21, my daughter was 19, we had a son of 17, a son of 16 and the youngest was 11 at the time.

ADV POTGIETER: We are talking about an incident that happened approximately 18 years ago.

So at the moment they are all adults.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: I beg your pardon?

ADV POTGIETER: You say at the moment they are all adults.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, they are all adults.

ADV POTGIETER: And are they self-sufficient?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, they are independent.

ADV POTGIETER: In 1978, you said that the eldest child was 21 and your second eldest daughter was 19 years old. They were at university at the time.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, they were at the university at the time.

ADV POTGIETER: And have they completed their studies since?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: My daughter could not complete her studies, the boy, my son was working in the evenings and he was a full-time student, but he used to do part-time work at restaurants and wherever else he could find employment, but my daughter could not and the other children, the youngest one was at primary school and the two others were i high school, but the third child could not proceed with the normal life before they found out what happened to their father. He just couldn’t live a normal life.

ADV POTGIETER: Just to go back to the incident itself. On the 1st of November of 1978, that morning was the last occasion on which you actually saw your husband, Mr Van der Merwe.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, that’s right.

ADV POTGIETER: Could you just tell us about the happenings of that morning of the 1st of November 1978?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Do you mind if I read it, please?

ADV POTGIETER: Certainly.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Is that better, can they hear me clearly? On the 1st of November 1978 and the works thereafter, on the 1st of November I saw my husband for the last time. We had breakfast together at the house where we living at the house in Swartklip. At approximately seven o’clock the morning I left home to the school where I was teaching. My husband would have gone to the farm called Doringlaagte that day, a farm which belonged to his mother, because he intended to shoot a goat for us. That farm is approximately 60 kilometres from our home. I was never to see him again.

That same afternoon I received a report that my husband’s mother had suddenly passed away. I immediately tried to make arrangements to trace my husband to inform him about the report about his mother’s death.

A neighbour at Doringlaagte, Mr Jan Smit, found my (then alive) husband at Doringlaagte and informed him. I was not worried when he did not return home on the evening of the 1st of November, because I assumed that he had gone to his sister’s house where his mother was staying, to make the funeral arrangements. It was only five days later that my husband’s car was found near the border at Buffelsdrift. At the time of the anxiety, there was an even bigger sad news waiting about my husband. What had happened to my husband? And this uncertainty hung over us like a dark cloud. Excuse me.

I had to compose myself as quickly as possible so that I could support my children. What happened to me and my children since the 1st of November; the uncertainty and the worry about my husband’s disappearance was to get worse in the months that followed. There were three possibilities. His disappearance could have been due to a sudden loss of memory or kidnapping or his killing. Thereafter we placed our hopes on the fact that he could possibly have been found alive.

At this stage my children were as old as I had indicated earlier. All of a sudden I was alone and I was responsible for their maintenance. There were no funds, except for my monthly salary which was approximately R600,00 per month. We were expected to survive on that. Two children were at university and three were at school and I had to keep myself together in order to give my children emotional support in a world which had suddenly crushed and fallen apart around them due to the death of their father.

My two eldest children failed their November exams at the Potchefstroom University. The university had understood the position in such a way that they allowed the childrento write supplementary exams. At the beginning of 1979 the two children wanted to go and reregister at the university, but the bank manager informed me that I did not have any security. The circumstances were such that I was completely dependent on my husband. He was the one that was running all the financial matters and from November to January circumstances were such at my house that I did not even think about money. It was a question of trying to survive on a daily basis, from day to day. It never occurred to me that because of the way in which my husband had died, that if there were any funds available from him, that it would have been taken away from me because we were not married in community of property.

The bank manager informed me that I did not have any security and thus I would not have any funds to enable my children to reregister at the university. With the greatest of difficulty and worry, I managed with the assistance of the children to get them to complete their studies, but they could not all do that. I had to remind myself constantly that I should not let my emotions affect my children, and at the same time I had do everything in my power to answer the questions that were running through my mind and try and fill the vacuum that had been left by the disappearance of their father.

This uncertainty and the utter feeling of helplessness that was caused by the disappearance of my husband, was probably worse than receiving news of his death one time. If I could put it this way, it would have been better for me just to hear that he had an accident with a gun or he had a car accident. It would have been better for me to digest the news, but the fact that there was no body even to bury, led to the fact that there was no official evidence of his death. This led to me not being able to conduct financial transactions such as buying a house. The Transvaal education department which I was working for and the financial institutions did not regard me as a breadwinner as such. My whole life was then an uncertainty.

The South African Police’s findings of what happened after the 1st of November 1978 in the Supreme Court of South Africa, were that due to he – was due to that, that the investigations had revealed that four Freedom fighters had gone to the region of Thabazimbi in November 1978 and their instruction was to make contact with the farmers there and also identify places where there were possible bases that could be used to their advantage.

An interview with a leading figure with regard to the infiltration figures to Botswana, in the report, someone known as Mr X revealed the following. ‘The four Freedom fighters went to stop next to the road and were hiking when a White man in his car appeared on the scene. He stopped for them and they got in the car and they forced him at gun point to go back in the opposite direction from which he had come from and go and load some things.

Thereafter they led him into the bushes, whereafter two of them who were known in the MK unit as Pedro and John Msibe, shot him from behind. Thereafter Pedro turned the White man around who had fallen on his face, turned him around and shot him in his forehead. After these findings the Supreme Court certified my husband as dead, left my children in another vacuum of uncertainty. Why was such a horrendous deed done to my husband, which cost him his life. For what purpose, what were they hoping to achieve by that? Mr Chairperson and honourable members of the Truth Commission, you have heard so many stories of horrible deeds. Stories of people who have hurt others without batting an eyelid. You have gone into the hearts and minds of people whose wounds have shattered their lives.

My story and that of my children is but a minor story in comparison with these others for whom we feel sympathy. Our pain is but a mere drop in the ocean of South Africa’s suffering. Even if we do not want to use this opportunity to highlight our problems, and looking for sympathy, that is not what we want to do. In doing this we have done that in all the years. That is why I sat and thought about it for a long time before I came to you.

My story is the story about a woman with five children, whose husband was a peace-loving citizen, who, wherever he lived or worked, was also respected by the Blacks in those communities. A man who was killed unnecessarily in a cowardly and cruel manner, while he was helping his murderers. They abused the best of humanity.

I would like to add to this, that my husband had the trust of the local community. He was fluent in Tswana, he was known all over as someone with a big heart, who would not leave a stone unturned in a quest to assist other people. This way he would take Blacks to the hospital if they needed it and some other times he would take his family’s food and medication and dish it out where it was necessary.

Now I would like to say to you, that the years that we were living in Botswana, were years of extreme drought. The same as our people are suffering today. People used to come to us, come walking to us. I can remember one particular incident where a father had come, had walked for days with his little daughter until they got to us. The man told my husband that this was his only surviving child and that this child had also taken ill and that he was now looking for help. My husband took all the medicines that the doctors had given to us, because we were living in such a remote area, he took all those medicines and used them to help get that child healthy again. We kept the father and child there until the child was completely recovered.

At another time an entire family turned up on our doorstep, where they were on the road for days, because where they had come from there was no food any longer. Their crops had all failed and they had come to ask my husband for work. My husband showed them that there is nothing on this farm, but at the same time there were extreme problems and the crops were destroyed due to the drought, but in spite of all that, it was a family of seven, and he took that entire family and kept them on the farm. There was no work for them, but he told them that he was keeping them on the farm and that they could eat with us. They would share what we had with us every day and that was the man, that was the man I married, that was my husband.

The Tswanas in the region gave him the nickname RasiTswana, that means father of the Tswanas. Ironically enough, it was his (my husband’s fatherly demeanour ) fatherliness that led to his death.

My story wants to put this question to you. Would these people that were responsible for the deed, now that the liberation struggle has been completed, be able to answer us what was achieved by this, who benefited from this, what purpose did it all serve? From a military strategic point of view or from the viewpoint of the struggle, if these questions could contribute to answering the questions of the senselessness of what took place and this one deed in isolation could highlight the folly of what took place then, then this story has a humble contribution to bringing our country to where it is today, and will have made a contribution to the liberation.

If we could learn from this that violence does not provide any answers, and that each and every person that commits violence with a revolver in his hand, could start all over again and just think about the consequences of what a single shot could do.

My submission to you is not a prosecution, Mr Chairperson. I have no need to have anyone prosecuted. My submission is a plea for reason. If your Commission could be put in the state to put our country under the impression of the folly of the violence of the past, then every bit of evidence that could contribute to that, should be submitted to you. If you could find the faults of the system, then it is good, but if you can show that violence is primarily a waste and that it has no part in a system, that would be even better, because we in this country have to show that each and every person has to accept responsibility.

A system cannot be used as an excuse for violence. How else are we supposed to, if we are not to take responsibility for our own deeds, going to take responsibility for others. The Tswanas have an idiom which I learnt from my husband which goes “a person is a person by other people, a person is only a person with other people”. We do have this duty to each other. The survival of our

people in this country depends on our co-operation with each other.My plea to you is, help people to throw their weapons away. Ask the State to do this by implementing effective rules, an efficient police force and an efficient judicial service, because no person’s life is a waste. Every person’s life is far too precious.

My story, Mr Chairperson and Commissioners is but a story of a woman who could not bury her husband because there was no corpse. Thank you very much for having listened to me.

ADV POTGIETER: We would like to say thank you very much to you, Mrs Van der Merwe. We appreciate you having come to share your story with us. I would like to put one or two questions to you.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Certainly.

ADV POTGIETER: It seems as if the actual pain in your experience was the fact that you never really got the remains of your husband, in order for you to bury him.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: That is correct. That left such an immense, indescribable feeling of a vacuum and you cannot explain it to anybody else. One’s one life, your whole life is incomplete.

ADV POTGIETER: It is now approximately 18 years after his disappearance, have you accepted now at this stage, that your husband is indeed dead as it became apparent from the investigation of the police as submitted to the Supreme Court?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, that is correct. The evidence which came to light was sufficient to convince us that he had lost his life and that he was gone.

ADV POTGIETER: Have you reconciled with that and do you accept today that he is dead?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, I have accepted it, but I would love to receive any of his remains, just to be able to say I have buried him.

ADV POTGIETER: What was the statement made by the police with regards to the fact that they could not find his remains in the area where the MK cadre had shown them where they had shot this person?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: This Mr X, I know some of the people’s names today, but this Mr X who was the leader said they did not explain to him precisely where they had left his body, but that they said to him that they left his body where they had shot him. If you know that region or if you know anything about that region, then you will realise that if a person walks in those bushes, you could probably pass a corpse like that approximately two feet from there, because that is how dense that bush is. In spite of the police having looked in that region, they went to the farm Doringlaagte and they fine-combed the area but the people, the employees on the farm who were in the farm, said that that night, the Wednesday evening, it was late afternoon. He had left the farm after he had received the message of his mother’s death and they heard his car from camp to camp as he would stop, they would hear the car stopping and starting up again and leaving. So he left the farm, but evidence which surfaced later, showed that he used the Rooibokkraal road and this is where he stopped for these people. It was something natural for him to do. If somebody had to ask him why he stopped, then I would be able to say that it was habit, it was habit for him. We were living in

such a place that the place where we lived was far from Thabazimbi and he would have assumed that the people were on their way to Thabazimbi, and that is why he would have stopped for them, to grant them the opportunity, a lift, to get them a lift to Thabazimbi. That is what he would have done.

ADV POTGIETER: You spoke about what things were like there. What about wild animals with regards to his remains.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Could you please repeat the question?

ADV POTGIETER: What is the situation with regard to wild animals in that region?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: There are many wild animals.

ADV POTGIETER: And what would happen to the remains that get left in the veld?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: It is improbable that a corpse like that would remain there, so that there is quite a good chance that the wild animals would then eat the remains, yes.

ADV POTGIETER: How old was your husband when he disappeared?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: He was 57 years old.

ADV POTGIETER: And was he politically active or militarily inclined?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: No, not at all. One of the things that surfaced in the matter was that he did not take part in politics at all. We lived in Botswana for years and even when we came back to the Republic he did not participate in any political activity. He was merely a farmer.

ADV POTGIETER: And just one last question. What happened to the … (farm?)

He was a vegetable farmer here and he was not happy with it, because livestock farming was part of his life.

“He grew up with livestock farming and he wanted to go back to Botswana to go and do livestock farming once again, and that is why he sold the farm. He always spoke about specifically about the farm which we had in Botswana. He used to speak about God’s own country, because this land was so unscathed and he was somebody that loved the open veld, and that he would always say that for him it is the most wonderful thing to farm with livestock, because that is God’s own country.

ADV POTGIETER: And the fact of the whole matter is that the disappearance of your husband left you in financial difficulty? It left you financially stranded, even though were earning a salary as a teacher.

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, my salary at that stage – I taught merely to earn extra income, because we could not maintain our family on that, so it was merely to help.

ADV POTGIETER: Just lastly, psychologically speaking, what is the position with your children, were there any psychological scars that have been left in their lives or have they reconciled with the fact that your husband has disappeared in the probable circumstances as you have sketched here?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: I would say that some of my children reconciled well with the fact but others were not able to work through this whole thing. A lot of them are independent people, as I said, some of them were extremely affected, deeply disturbed by the whole thing. So much so that some of them could not even complete their studies, some of them could. As I said, although today you can still that there are emotional scars with some of them, but some of them have managed the whole thing a bit better.

ADV POTGIETER: Thank you, ma’am, I have no further questions.

CHAIR: We have listened to everything you have said, thank you very much. Are there any questions? Dr Randera?

DR RANDERA: Mrs Van der Merwe, I would like to from myself, commend you in the way you have come forward today in an honest and open way and without any malice whatsoever. Shall I repeat what I said?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: I do understand Afrikaans, but I can’t hear it all the time.

DR RANDERA: Mrs Van der Merwe, I just want to come to my question which is that it seems that this issue of the MK soldiers involved or allegedly involved, hinges around the testimony of a Mr X, who happened to be an ANC person himself at the time. Could you please tell us the name of the security policeman who was involved in investigating this issue, the death of your husband?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: The security policeman who took the statement was Jan Karel Coetzee.

CHAIRPERSON: Yasmin Sooka?

MS SOOKA: I would just like to ask you, you talk about the information that you were given, being given to you at court. Ma’am, the facts which were given to you, at court, did you get all the facts at court?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: I saw this in the report, I had this in the report from the police, it was in 1982. I cannot remember the date too well, when I applied for a report regarding his death and at the time of his certification of death. After the certification of death the police, in fact the attorney who did this for me, sent me the police report.

MS SOOKA: (Speaker’s mike not on).

MRS VAN DER MERWE: Yes, that is correct.

MS SOOKA: What was his name, ma’am?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: It was the firm Dyason & Odendaal who were acting for me. They are today known as Dyason only.

MS SOOKA: (Speaker’s mike not on) … this question, because you are using the name Mr X. It seems that the person who is probably testifying in the capacity as an informer, and I would just like to know if you know anything about what actually transpired when Mr X gave his evidence?

MRS VAN DER MERWE: The only information which I have is what was in the report. I do not have any – I never saw the person, except for what was written in the report. That is the information which I have.

MS SOOKA: Thank you, ma’am.

CHAIR: Mrs Van der Merwe, firstly I would like to say that we appreciate the fact that you have come to come and give evidence here and also, we would like to express our sympathy towards you and your family. It is, one could say, it is, but in English they say that it easy to praise someone that is fasting on a full stomach, because you do not feel the pain and suffering, the pain and the suffering is not yours, it is that of the other person. But I hope that the feeling itself when you gave evidence here, that

you felt that people in the audience sympathised with you. The first witness whom we heard this morning, spoke in the same vein, about if only they could find the remains of their son, that they would like to be able to bury him. Here you come along and I believe that it is something wonderful for our country, to be able to experience and accept the fact that we are all but human, Black or White, we all feel the same pain, we all feel the same anguish. When you said here that a person can only be a person by other people, for all the people here to hear that, they are all standing with you. We hope that the truth will surface one day, about what exactly happened to your husband.

We would also like to say that we appreciate the fact that you are not bearing any grudges, and that you could say the way you did, that your story is about pain and you say that it is but a drop in the ocean, when one takes into account the other pain which so many of our other people experienced.

The fact remains, it is still pain, it is your pain, it is something that happened to you and we pray firstly, that God will annoint the wounds with His Holy Spirit and soothe it in that way, and in that way bring about healing. But also, that now that we have a new system, that we all will be determined that things like these, which you have told us about, will not happen again in our country. That each and everyone of us will say I have decided that I will work with everyone who wants to rid this country of violence and keep it out of this country.

Thank you very much for what you have said about weapons and so forth, and we hope that those who have heard your evidence will take cognisance of it. Thank you very

Where do old Boer soldiers go after fighting the good fight?

May 31 2013 – The South African soldiers who fought in the African bush against terrorist-communist infiltrators were known as some of the toughest guys on the planet. Their phenomenal knowledge of the African veldt and tribal customs was inherited from their Boer forebears – with a lot of help and advice from the KhoiSan bushmen. These guys love Africa and know no other place as well as they do the African bush.

However – what happened to these tough Boer guys after their ‘Afrikaner’ president FW de Klerk voluntarily handed over their beloved country to their communist enemies in 1994?

 SA bush-fighter Gene Becker turned to art for his survival after his country was lost to communism after 1994… genebecker@live.com

At the age of 17, Gene Becker was already doing a man’s job: tracking terrorist-infiltrators on the border of Namibia:

As a fifteen-year-old, he’d left his parents behind back in Johannesburg — dad was a businessman, mom an artist – and joined the South African Defence Force in 1978. Two years later he was amongst the most elite troops – those trained as trackers at then-Southwest Africa’s Caprivi Strip (Omega Base). The army was his home, and he has also made lifelong comrades at Omega Base. 

• Now known as Namibia, a gigantic desert-country with only 1,1-million people,  it also has some of the world’s most valuable mineral-resources such as uranium and diamonds. At that time, SWA was being run under a UN-mandate dating back to 1920, which was granted to the South African government. So Pretoria’s military leaders, who sent its bush-fighters to bases all along the northerly borders, also sent them into Namibia.

But by 1991, Gene Becker – like many Boers at that time — was becoming very disgruntled with the National Party government: those guys all knew that a bad storm was brewing when their arch-enemy, Nelson Mandela, was released from prison.

Boer Freedom Fighter:

So, after he had done his required military duty, he quit the army and joined Eugene Terre’Blanche’s Aquila bodyguard at the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging in Ventersdorp. In his own view: he became a Boer Freedom fighter. He says rather casually that while working for Aquila, he was “arrested for treason against the NP-government for a spate of bombs in 1990′. He was detained without trial under Article 29 of the Internal Security Act – but received amnesty. “Still fervently anti-communist, I then founded the White Alliance Movement in 1992,’ he said. However – he went to ground when the police raided their headquarters and found arms and explosives. This happened during the infamous, very violent handover period from 1991 – when Mandela was released from prison – and 1994, when the ANC was handed over hegemony of South Africa.Most of the so named ‘apartheid-era dead’ actually died during this brief period between 1991 and 1994.

• The majority of these deaths were caused by black-on-black violence as the ANC-backed forces were battling for political control of South African homelands and organizing their political campaign with military precision.

Many Boers like Gene Becker were by then growing very angry with the De Klerk government. “Why did we fight in the bush against the communists who now are being invited in to run our country,’ many wanted to know. Many quit the military in disgust, too. And many decided to fight.

So when the independent homeland of Bophuthatswana pleaded for help against being forcibly incorporated into South Africa during violent communist-orchestrated uprisings, many of the Boers in the AWB and other similar movements heeded that call. Becker: “I was called up to help quell that communist-inspired uprising in Bophuthatswana in 1994 and was issued an R4 assault rifle by that government,’ he said.

Balmoral Boer Concentration Camp Museum:

He then started working as a hotel manager – but after the Twin Towers in New York city was bombed, he feared that WWIII had arrived – and moved  to Balmoral farm where the Boer Concentration Camp victims’ graves are located. He was asked by the former 32nd Battalion Commander Willem Ratte who held the lease to run it, to manage the Balmoral Visitors Centre due to his hotel-management experience

• They soon formed a group of dedicated volunteers around them – and raised funds to renovate the dilapidated farm and build a small museum dedicated as a memorial to the many Boers who had died in the British’ colonial war which destroyed the two independent Boer Republics in 1902. They also organised memorial days where young people were taught about their own nation’s history –  which was no longer being taught in SA public schools after 1994…

Ratte, a quiet, dedicated Boer with strong leadership abilities, also helped trained many young men as skilled artisans to teach them to become independent entrepreneurs. For by that time, many young Boer males were no longer ‘eligible’ for any jobs in South Africa: by 2010 the SA government had already started putting its anti-white hiring laws in place. Under the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment Act, many working-class Boer families were becoming destitute very rapidly from this time onwards as their wage-earners were being fired and replaced with black ANC party card-carrying members.

• That was the situation at this tragedy-ridden farm with its long history of tears, suffering and blood when, in 2010, Balmoral was raided by the police. They found his old R4 he’d kept after the Bophuthatswana defence force action.  “In 2011, I was sentenced to five years prison – ten months effectively and the rest under house arrest. And that’s where I am now,” he said.

So what does a tough bush-tracker like Gene Becker do now that he’s turned his back on all this mayhem and gone into ‘survival-mode’ in a country which denies jobs to all ‘whites’ like him and even denies him the right to honor his own history?

The answer may surprise you. He’s turning out some of the most beautiful pastel art I’ve ever clapped eyes on. From beautiful soft girls with nipple-rings, to a stunning portrait of Pablo Picasso. He also loves doing portraits for people – but always retains his own inimitable style. Never ‘advantaged by apartheid’

Where did he learn his art? At his artist mother’s knee: “I am self-taught just watching my mother…’ he said. So this is what tough old Boer bush-soldiers like Gene Becker do for a living these days. He says even though he’s poor, he’s proud. And one fact is certain: no-one can ever say that he ‘was advantaged by apartheid’ when they see his living quarters today.  Like most Boers, he’s never been “rich”, mind you. But he is most definitely a survivor.

Omega base:

SouthWestAfricaTerritorialForces’ – Omega Base served as HQ for 31 Battalion – also known as the ‘Bushmen’ Battalion. The Battalion consisted primarily of Bushmen soldiers from the Mbarakwengo and the Vasquela tribes in Namibia. These soldiers have exceptional natural tracking and bushcraft abilities and were organized into a specialized and highly effective counterinsurgency unit during the war.
