Gutter Level SA journalism

Is this top journalist David Bullard’s more sensitive side? ‘Fruitcake, Cocks, Gang-Rape of small businesses, Raging Harridans’ … today’s South African journalism at its worst.

Nothing illustrates the filthy gutter level of present-day South African journalism better than the verbal cock-fight which raged this week between South African journalists David Bullard, Ivo Vegter and Free Market Foundation director Leon Louw – versus a 40-strong group of anti-rape activists.

David “Mdavo’  Bullard (twitter @lunchout2) didn’t exactly show his ‘sensitive side’ when he jumped feet-first into a verbal cock-fight between “Outraged English-speaking White Males” versus “Wimmen Activists” rape survivors  on Twitter. The twitter-row erupted after columnist/journalist Ivo Vegter (below) defended  the use of the word “rape” by Free Market Foundation executive director Leon Louw  — when he described the way in which government gets businesses to agree to absurd new legislation: in this case the controversial Business Licensing Bill: (below)

VegterIvoColumnRapeOfBusinessCommunityGetsRapeSurvivorCharleneSmithHotUnderCollar Above: SA journalist Ivo Vegter and Free Market Foundation exec Leon Louw (right) raised the hackles of a group of anti-rape activists. The women-activists raised a ruckus about the use of the word ‘rape’ as relating to the ANC-regime’s new ‘Business Licensing Bill. This Bill is indeed an abominable document – it will effectively give government officials legal license to shake down even the smallest, most struggling entrepreneurs  — even more than they are already doing. The verbal exchanges between the men and the women inevitably ended up, as such verbal battles always do, in a cock-fight. And that vile new law which will destroy even the smallest entrepreneur, has now been completely forgotten…

Fruitcake, Cocks, Gang-Rape of small businesses … South African journalism at its best?

Top South African Sunday Times columnist David ‘Mdavo” Bullard @lunchout2 jumped in cock-first, writing about self-exiled South African journalist, author and rape survivor Charlene Smith: “Excellent piece by @IvoVegter . The Smith woman seems in urgent need of psychiatric help. But US Medicare ain’t cheap… ‘and: ‘Don’t worry about La Smith’s comment. She hasn’t seen a dick, big or small, in years…’ and… ‘those who worked with her 30 years ago tell me she was a fruitcake back then…’

SmithCharleneExSABCauthorOfMandelaAndAmericaBookOct2012Above right: Bullard himself views this cock-fight in a different light altogether. He views all the women who launched into their attack as ‘Wimmen Lefty Activists” and “Spitting Harridans’ who attacked Free Speech Rights in South Africa. writing on June 13:

  • “Reserve Bank governor Gill Marcus is living on borrowed time I suspect. Last week she made a speech echoing pretty much everything I wrote in last week’s column — thus committing the unforgivable sin of ‘negativism”.  He continues:

Anti free-speech campaign by the ‘propagandist, money-spinning Lead SA”

Thanks to pernicious campaigns like the propagandist, money-spinning “Lead SA” –those of us who are a mite critical of the current administration are no longer permitted to speak our thoughts, however sensible they may be. Well we are but be assured that the lefties will be down on us like a ton of bricks. As poor Ivo Vegter found out last week when he posted a piece on the Daily Maverick website defending the use of “rape” as used by Free Market Foundation executive director Leon Louw in an opinion piece he had written for BizDay.  — Louw had used gang rape as a metaphor for how governments get business to agree to absurd new legislation, in this case the controversial Business Licensing Bill. He made it quite clear that he was referring to ‘regulatory gang rape’.

Before you could say Jimmy Savile the wrath of the entire feminist/activist/professional victim movement was upon him. The Twittersphere was full of swivel eyed lunacy and poor Louw apparently received a letter from 40 outraged (what else?) wimmin activists presumably demanding an apology and refusing to accept the use of the word “rape” to mean anything other than the violation of a woman against her will. – - So bad luck Alexander Pope.

“Louw was his usual decent self and discussed the problem with the complainants but faced with 40 spitting harridans he probably had no option. Ivo Vegter then wrote his piece and got into even more trouble for trying to defend Louw’s freedom of speech. The favoured tactic of the loony left is to drown out civilised discourse and resort to insult.

  • One particularly poisonous comment was from Charlene Smith, an ex SA struggle journalist who has pushed off to live in the US of A where she could dispense her dubious wisdom in comparative safety. Her contribution was thus :
  • “Ivo Vegter has always been a rather boring little man. The sort who resorts to adolescent shock tactics-dropping his pants or someone else’s-to get attention away from the fact that he is a dull writer. I suspect he has small dick syndrome”.

Bullard writes: “Hardly impressive stuff from someone who claims on her Facebook page to be a multi award winning journalist. Such was the level of debate from the outraged wimmin activist crowd. Having worked briefly with Vegter on “The Maverick” magazine I can vouch for the fact that he is neither boring nor short and that his writing is far from dull. In fact, I would recommend him over me any day if you want a decent bit of analysis. Of course, his views on fracking are a bit suspect but nobody’s perfect. As to his dick….well I haven’t played squash with him so I am in no position to comment.

So what is this all about once the tear gas and smoke has cleared? Well it sure as hell aint about rape being an awful and far too common occurrence in SA. It’s all about a group of wimmin victims who believe their rights trump everybody else’s. How dare we use a word that might possibly offend a sensitive woman?  In future Mr Louw kindly send your copy to be pre approved by the Wimmin’s Activists and they’ll tell you what you can say – you cheeky misogynist you.

And of course it’s about people who lead rather drab and uneventful lives demanding and getting a bit of media attention. Just imagine the chit chat at this week’s coven meeting….”we really did it to that Leon Louw and Ivo Vegter dint we? That’ll show them. Bastard men.” Have you ever heard such nonsense or, indeed, anything so dangerous?

LOONY LEFTISM IS CREEPING ACROSS THE LAND…

But I’m afraid that loony leftism is creeping across the land and thanks to social media, idiots who wouldn’t otherwise have their voices heard are able to muster reinforcements on Twitter and howl down any point of view with which they happen to disagree. Which is why it’s important to expose them as the uncouth charlatans they are. To do otherwise is to let the howling mob win the day.

David Bullard still suffers constant pain from 9mm bullet, and has terrible nightmares.

David Bullard continues: “I was shot and left for dead in 2007. I feel constant pain from the 9mm bullet lodged in my pelvis to this day and suffer terrible nightmares. I don’t want to make a big thing about it but I would like you all to stop using phrases like “giving it his best shot” and “shooting the lights out”. The memories of this bodily violation are much too painful for me and being shot is no laughing matter, particularly if the guy with the gun aims properly. Failure to observe this simple request may lead me to become another outraged, foul mouthed, demented perpetual victim.

“Apropos Gill Marcus and I -  and our negativity. It’s not only Dot and Kumar who we have upset with our humble economic observations and suggestions that if we don’t extract a digit then we’ll soon be on the third world scrap heap. Cyril Ramaphosa has also told us to stop whining about SA’s problems.-  “We must move away from being the biggest complainers” he says and he is, of course, absolutely right when he says we must also offer solutions.

I didn’t have to think long and hard about this one but one obvious solution occurred to me:

  • Vote for somebody who can run a country without plundering the public purse in 2014.

The comments (above)  were, in Afrikaans: “It looks like we must again pick up our AK47s here in the fucking Western Cape. I am sick of farmers and the DA”. The comments continued: “The fucking farmers know who our leaders are, and now our leaders are being targeted,” adding the DA wants to make the Western Cape a province for “Boere”.The municipality covers Bela Vista, Ceres, Tulbagh and Wolsely. This comes amid tension in the Ceres fruit-growing area following a series of pay strikes.

Ben Welthagen 60 survives headshot during farm-shop attack, Mooinooi Rustenburg

WELTHAGEN Ben 60 Rustenburg farm shop attack survives shot through head Above: 20 Dec 2012 Ben Welthagen 60 survives shot through head at farm-shop attack, Mooinooi Rustenburg Dec 24 2012 Sixty-year-old Mr Ben Welthagen had a miraculous escape when he was shot through the head at the farm shop he rents out to Bangladeshi citizen Hassan Hoessein on Friday 08h00 in Rustenburg. It’s a miracle he said, ‘I got a second life’, spekaing from his bed at the LIfe Peglerae hospital in Rustenburg. The Welthagen couple said on Friday morning they were inside their home next to the farm shop when a worker rushed out shouting for help. Welthagen stepped closer he said and ‘an man attacked me with a knife, another one pushed a pistol against my glasses and fired a shot. It felt like an explosion, like an electric shot going through me. Initially there was no pain and I hoped nothing vital was hit. The attacker just pushed the pistol behind his pant’s belt and walked away,’ he said. The bullet entered his right-eye bank, traveled through the sinus passages, the left jaws and exited beneath his left ear through his neck. It missed arteries and the brain. Moreover his brother-in-law Theuns van Staden who rushed him to hospital got a flat tyre but a man stopped and took Mr Welthagen the rest of the way. Mrs Kotie Welthagen said her husband remained standing upright after he was shot and told her he was ‘shot in the face’. “Then I just saw blood. It was a horrific experience.’ Mr Welthagen said enroute to hospital he didn’t think for one minute that he would not survive. “I was bleeding heavily but I could feel my breathing was normal and I was fully aware.’ Surgeons removed tiny shards from his glasses from his right eye on Friday afternoon and repaired a tear in the eyeball. They are still not certain how much permanent damage he sustained. His jaws were wired up and he also lost several teeth. Meanwhile two of the five attackers who looted Mr Hoessein’s shop have been arrested. Mr Hoessain remained unharmed, albeit traumatised by the violent robbery

He said Rosselloty’s girlfriend Nokwazi Ntuli had suffered a cruel and undignified death. “(Her) only crime was that she did not stay away from him, despite constant fighting and abuse,” said the Judge. Rossolloty admitted to killing Ntuli and setting fire to the body.During the trial, the court heard that Rossolloty also raped a six-year-old girl. The now 11-year-old victim and her mother provided testimony at the trial, saying both were traumatised for life. Rossolloty had previously been sentenced for two aggravated assaults. Law Library: “Girl tells court of rape ordeal – 11 February 2012: An 11-year-old girl yesterday identified accused Gerald Rosselloty (40) as the man who threw her on a bed and raped her in 2006 when she was six years old – after telling her he had a present for her. The girl’s mother, who once had a relationship with Rosselloty, said when she left her daughter in his care that day “she was perfect”. On her arrival at Howes’s flat in response to an SMS that night, she was shown where the child had bled on a couch and was also handed a plastic bag containing blood and body tissue. She rushed the child to MediClinic, but the doctor there referred them to Grey’s saying it was a “state matter”. Nurses at MediClinic notified the police. At Grey’s Hospital the child was taken straight to theatre for an operation to repair her vagina. During an examination she had also noticed cigarette burns on her little girl and blood coming from her nose. The child spent one week in Grey’s Hospital and another at St Anne’s where she underwent a second operation and was seen by a psychologist. Throughout this period doctors were unable to stop her bleeding. Both of them are still undergoing counselling. – The Witness website Gruesome discovery in bath – 10 February Warrant officers Alvin Freddy and Wiseman Ngcobo from the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit, said Gerald Rosselloty was identified as a suspect in the rape of the child and he was subsequently arrested. Ngcobo said he had intended to interview the little girl before he handed over the investigation to another officer, but “she was in theatre” at the time and he could not talk to her. During cross examination yesterday Rosselloty’s lawyer, Chetna Singh, suggested to police witnesses who testified about the arson and murder charges, that “Rosselloty claims he fell asleep next to his girlfriend on the night in question, and later woke up to find himself in the passenger seat of his bakkie parked about half a kilometre from the scene of the fire at the Callanish Gardens complex”. He also denies he told police he had left to go to the “Mighty Men Christian conference in Greytown” and “turned back” when he got a message in the early hours that his simplex was on fire. District surgeon Dr Danraj Maney said no soot was found in the trachea of Nokwazi Ntuli when he carried out a post mortem in April 2010. Even when unconscious, people breathe in soot if they are in a fire situation, said Maney. Ntuli had broken ribs, internal chest and heart injuries, and forehead injuries. She was small and slender and probably weighed about 57kg, said Maney. Rosemary Hele, the sister of Gerald Arthur Rosselloty’s landlord, described the events of April 17, 2010 and how the accused seemed unfazed about losing all his belongings in the fire. The owner of the apartment, Graham Carter, is also a complainant in the case, claiming to have lost an estimated R700 000 in property. The state also alleges that Rosselloty molested his then nine-year-old daughter.

Protestors ordered to torch West Cape farms

Du Toit Farm Group: Robertson:  Evidence that instructions were given to torch our properties – Also: industrial sabotage at the Duvha power-station: Middelburg

21 November 2012 – “All indications are that specific instructions were given to burn down property and movable assets – causing millions of Rands damage to our business – by political powers with their own agendas”…  Statement by board of directors,  P.S.F. du Toit – G.C. du Toit of Robertson, WC, South Africa

FARM VIOLENCE DU TOIT GROUP ROBERTSON NOV 2012 STATEMENT

ANARCHY IN THE FRUIT INDUSTRY OF THE WESTERN CAPE
Statement: “The present anarchy taking place on most of our agri properties in the Western Cape caused a major break in confidence in the future of Agri investment. This anarchy is mainly driven by provoked worker emotions. In the process, serious and well intended investors in this Agri Sector as well as our workers are abused by political powers with own agendas.’

This dangerous game has now derailed and the results are as follows:

    1. All indications suggest that specific instructions to burn down property and movable assets caused millions of Rands damage to our business.
    2. Further huge consequential losses are caused as a result of disruptions due to critical and time-based agricultural practices that can not be executed.
    3. Long-term labour relations were destroyed because this orchestrated campaign was fuelled by unfounded promises by political representatives, such as unions and political parties.
    4. Major losses occurred as a result of minority groups of workers who received specific orders to target selected properties.
    5. This minority group of workers violently intimidated and assaulted well intended workers and management of Dutoit Agri.

The slow and inefficient reaction by Government to protect our assets and people, confirms the strong suspicion that this is an ill intended campaign by unions and political parties.
In the interest of our stakeholders Dutoit Agri has the following urgent and serious message:

    1. To the Government:
1.1 Protect the agricultural community of the Western Cape with sufficient police and security forces.
1.2 Expose the saboteurs and keep them accountable as the law prescribes.
1.3 Arrest the identified saboteurs and let justice take its course.

    2. To the well intended Workers:
2.1 We know about your suffering and trauma over the past three (3) days. We will support you and do everything within our ability to restore and protect job opportunities which was built up through the past years.
2.2 Although difficult, please do your best to continue with critical tasks so that our company can survive.

    3. To the Management:
3.1 The severe traumatisation, sleepless nights and life threatening situations you had to go through the last three (3) days makes each of you a hero during the time of crisis.
3.2 Your dedication is a sense of proof that the greater calling of Dutoit people is to unite and to stand together for the survival and pursuit of our vision.

    4. To the Community:
Thank you for thousands of messages of support and prayers. We appreciate it and it encourages us to continue to share the welfare we bring to South Africa and the Western Cape with our stakeholders.

    5. To our Clients:
5.1 We will do everything within our power to continue to deliver the high quality products, which nature provides us with, according to our agreement with you.
5.2 Please accept this episode in our history as a once-off event.

5.3 Over the years we have not yet disappointed you. Trust that we will continue our commitment in the future. We apologize for the anarchy during the past week.

It was beyond our control. Hopefully our government finally realized that law and order is non-negotiable to operate successful businesses to the benefit of all.

    6. To our Providers:
6.1 We appreciate your understanding and support in the current crisis.
6.2 Please work together with us to restore and rebuild assets that were destroyed so that we can perform our critical tasks.

Du Toit has farmed for more than 100 years:

Hereby attached find photos of horrific scenes as evidence of the potential of political power struggle play-offs in our community where so many people are dependant on agriculture.  Our prayers, hope and desire is that Dutoit Agri will soon be allowed to continue with the good work which has been done for more than 100 years.

Demand to set conditions for trading policies in agricultural sector in South Africa:
This disruptive experience compels us to set a condition that trading policies are clearly stipulated, before any further investment in the agricultural sector in South Africa takes place. Namely:

A clear policy framework which sets out support from the government for agriculture in South Africa
A commitment to farmers and agricultural workers’ safety and to guarantee the protection of their properties.

Our experience of these events is that serious questions now arise, such as:
    1. To what extent can we automate and mechanize our processes to be more productive and reduce dependence on labour?
    2. Are there crops that we can farm with where labour can be minimized or eliminated to reduce labour risK?

Weighed against Dutoit Agri’s fantastic resources, years of experience and market relationships; the above-mentioned options could lead to a tragedy for our current workers,  not even to mention job creation for the youth of our future.

    Yours sincerely,P.S.F. du Toit

Today, despite the Cosatu trade union advising its workers to ‘go back to work’ because the strike had been ‘suspended for two weeks’ violence broke out from early on Thursday-morning.

DE DOORNS SAPS HIT BY STONE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL

Strike ‘suspended’ but violence goes on:

Despite the admonition yesterday that the strike was ‘suspended for two weeks’’  however -  from 5h30am today the N1 highway at De Doorns was again closed, with renewed violence. Within half an hour, reports came in of violence in Robertson and Ceres as well.

Yesterday at 12h45 a youth in De Doorns called Denver Mezini tweeted this picture below saying “When you go to work, this will happen to you, in my hometown De Doorns. Shit People is Heartless’. He wrote: “I have exams I have to focus on. But how the hell can I focus if people in my town is doing that to else other? Later on he tweeted: ‘Die mense het nou ‘n padstal afgebrand en die polisiebeamptes kan niks..’ (He used a picture from the SAPS forensic files of attacked miners in Marikana, Rustenburg in August 2012: the person below was not attacked in De Doorns yesterday).

DE DOORNS COSATU CALLS FOR NATIONWIDE FARM WORKERS STRIKE nov142012However despite the call to ‘suspend the strike for two weeks and go back to work’ yesterday, the N1 route through De Doorns was closed due to a  fresh outbreak of violence early on Thursday November 15 http://t.co/GgCzisDC

Left: Cosatu’s announcement: “Marikana comes to the farms’ was theDe Doorns Cosatu intimidation DA statement despicable Nov14 2012 signal which set off the scorched-earth campaign against the Western Cape farms Monday a week ago. Yesterday in a brief announcement, the Mail & Guardian wrote that ‘ government and labour agreed to suspend the strike for two weeks, and for workers to return to work on Thursday”. The paper did not name the officials who had issued the call.

‘ Buses from Cape Town with demonstrators to ‘stoke the strike’ – Zille

Right– The DA also condemned Cosatu’s intimidation of farm workers in the strongest terms:

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille also issued a statement yesterday from the Joint Operations Centre – from where she had been tweeting updates. Earlier on Wednesday she tweeted that she had received information that busses had arrived in Wolseley from Cape Town “to stoke the strike there”. Zille said she was in contact with both the provincial and national police commissioners calling for the defence force to be deployed, as police were “stretched thin”. Also, there had been “no reply” to an urgent letter sent to President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday night, and his office had not returned her call, she said.

AgriSA – representing the farmers – also called a press conference after a worker was killed and four workers were injured in the violence yesterday. They slammed the campaign and said “it was definitely a political matter.”

“This is the worst violence that we have ever experienced… For sure it is forces from the outside. It is political,” Agri SA Western Cape president Cornie Swart said. “People are being driven in by buses and taxis. It’s not a strike. It’s a total, political, blown-up thing.”

The labour department expressed condolences to the family of a farmworker killed in Wolseley on Wednesday morning and called for an end to violence. Western Cape police confirmed that a man had been killed as a result of police action and five other people injured during protests in Wolseley.

Deaths, injuries:  one worker killed; injured: four workers, a police officer and a photographer.

An unnamed man died yesterday of a gunshot wound in Wolseley and four demonstrators were injured while shops were plundered. A police officer was injured in Ceres: Eyewitness News . “Die Burger’ photographer Lulama Zenzile was rushed hospital from Ashton with unspecified injuries yesterday.  In Wellington, WC premier Helen Zille had tweeted early yesterday that an Afrikaner farmer was killed – however two hours later, Agri-SA said at a press conference that this was incorrect.

Yesterday, farmers in the Witzenberg valley at 10h00am reportedly were trapped near Ceres by a large group of black protestors who closed the Geido-pass. And wheat-fields were torched in that region at 11h00. The violence continued spiraling outwards from the Hex River Valley with large storage-sheds and wheat crops at the Du Toit Farm Group’s Ceres farms torched at 11h30. At Somerset West, at around noon some 80 violent protestors set up a burning road-block and demanded R250 a day minimum wages. Previous demands had been R160. By 16h40, some 5,000 people were rioting in Porterville and a small group was burning rubber tyres at a Tulbagh intersection.  BloombergReport

ANC-Minister to review farm-workers minimum wages’ next week

DE DOORNS ANC LABOUR MINISTER OLIPHANT REVIEWING FARM WORKERS MINIMUM WAGES NOV142012 Left: (click on pic to enlarge) At 16h00 Nov 14 2012, the ANC’s national minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant, broke her mysterious week-long silence by releasing a statement to the news media announcing that she would hold a meeting next week to ‘review the minimum wage for farm workers’, which she had last set in March 2012 at R70 a day. The statement also noted that ‘her inspections had found that ‘some farmers paid more than the minimum wage’.  It made no mention of the violence which is engulfing the Western Cape farms.

    Cosatu intimidates farm workers:

As it was growing clear that farm-workers were being whipped and forced to participate in the violence against their own employers, the opposition Democratic Alliance issued a formal statement describing Cosatu ‘s intimidation of defenceless farm workers as ‘despicable’- statement.

Rolling flash mob brought their tyres, whips and matches with them:

This past week, just before dawn on Monday morning, an 8,000-strong black-male mob – locals said they were mostly Xhosas and Sothos – were dispatched to the farms in De Doorns with buses from nearby townships, even from as far away as Worcester and Ceres. Residents said this ‘rolling flash mob’ brought their tyres, whips and matches with them.

Afrikaans-speaking coloured farm workers said they were pulled from their cottages, and were intimidated into ‘striking’, many were told to stand out on the main N1 highway while the ‘flash-mob’ set fire to vineyards and two cottages of ‘uncooperative’ farm workers.

By Friday, the local ANC-councillor who the farm-workers said had incited the violence, allegedly had fled with his family from De Doorns, leaving a destroyed farming-village behind him. The local texting-site used by the workers said they were ‘happy to have him leave’, describing him amongst others as a ‘labour-broker’ who earned a great deal of money in the valley.

The police also blocked these ‘protestors’ from accessing the Stofland squatter camp just outside De Doorns.

Cosatu calls for ‘nationwide strike to support farm workers’

DE DOORNS COSATU CALLS ON FARMWORKERS NATIONWIDE TO STRIKE NOV102012On Saturday, Cosatu trade union already started calling for farm-workers countrywide to strike illegally in support of the arson-attacks and terrorism against these small mostly Afrikaner-owned farms at De Doorns: according to this tweet from EWNnews. (click to enlarge)

In preparation for worse to come, De Doorns farm-families meanwhile left the area temporarily while the farmers remain behind to guard the properties, with the help of the new Helivac security group.

‘Please Pray For Us: they are Burning Down Our Valley Just for a Few Rand:’

Farmers’ families have been leaving their farms since Friday-night 9 November. The crisis reached such emotional proportions amongst these families that popular Afrikaner singer/actor Steve Hofmeyr was asked to ‘pray for De Doorns: ‘they are burning down our valley just for a few Rand, the barbarians. My mom and her friends had to flee from their homes.’

GRAPE PRODUCING AREAS SOUTH AFRICA Above: The grape-producing regions of South Africa produce a total of some 42-million cartons (4,5kg each) annually mostly for the export market, producing valuable foreign-exchange for the SA economy. De Doorns in the Western Cape produces some 18million cartons a year.

500 illegal strikers dismissed by WestCape farmer near Paarl:

Meanwhile the Labour Department DID intervene last Thursday, when a BEE-farmer between Paarl and Malmesbury in the Western Cape was allowed to fire 500 workers legally: the department agreed. There has thus far been no such intervention in the illegal strike at De Doorns.  report

10,000 loaves of bread distributed to De Doorns workers:  DEDOORNS WORKER FAMILIES TENTHOUSAND LOAVES OF BREAD STRIKE

On Saturday, the Hex River Table Grapes Association distributed 10,000 loaves of bread to help feed farm-workers’ families who couldn’t buy any food. (Below) Several hours later, Cosatu issued its call to create a nationwide ‘strike’ against all the white-owned farms.

Background: De Doorns exports 18million cartons of table grapes a year

the tiny town of De Doorns (The Thorns)   is at the heart of  3,800 hectares of historic grape-farms in the Hex River valley. It also is SA’s single-largest table-grape production area. From this small valley alone, some 18million 4,5kg cartons of table grapes are exported per year. SA’s total output countrywide averages 42-million cartons annually.

After a week of violence and intimidation &  so-called negotiations between farmers’ representative AgriWesKaap and wealthy Cosatu trade union representative Tony Ehrenreich – during which death threats were uttered against specific farmers –  the workers were ‘told to go back to work and rather  negotiate directly with the farmer to get your own wage increased’.  However the damage had been done: the bonds of trust which existed between the long-time Afrikaans-coloured workers and their employers will be very difficult to repair, observers believe. Farmers are now speaking openly of mechanising their farming-operations. The Hex River Valley farmers believe that the ‘wage-negotiations’ were just a ploy – that basically the 8,000-strong mob was bused in to wreck their farms and town’s economy for purely political reasons.

This is also believed by political observers including West Cape Premier Helen Zille (who was chased off by rockthrowers shouting “Malema’) and said after this  attack that the ‘strikes’ in the Hex River Valley were politically-motivated.

DE DOORNS ZILLE THROWN WITH STONES NOV82012

Proof of intimidation against farm workers:

“ANC-instigator has left the valley with his family…”

On Friday-night Nov 10 2012, Afrikaans-coloured workers were clearly relieved that the violence had stopped: texting each other that ‘the ANC-instigator who intimidated us into striking, has left the valley with his family. All is peaceful now’.

Another worker texed: “Pat Nelie and his followers will be held accountable one day. They will burn down to the ground. Nelie had everything which the farmers had and look where is he today. Nelie: don’t be angry with the farmers be angry with yourself. Get a decent job and stop smuggling, stealing from trucks. If you lead an honest life your luck will turn. It won’t help to want to be a councillor, but then not work for the people and still expect to earn a big salary. Everything you have lost, is the Lord’s way to bring you back to earth and start anew. An hnest beginning. I wish you the best of luck Nelie, and heartily hope that your own supporters will in the end also not turn against you: as the saying goes: “What you sow you will harvest’.  link HEXRIVIER FARMWORKERS INTIMIDATED HOUSES TORCHED PIC LANDBOUWEEKBLAD NOV82012

Local farmers said Cosatu ‘negotiators’ threatened to start torching all the Western Cape farms ‘until they gave in to their demands of R150 a day wage increased (from the R70 legal minimum which was set by ANC-Labour minister Mildred Oliphant).

AGriWesKaap representatives were also personally threatened with their lives by Cosatu ‘negotiators’ and lodged formal charges with the local SAPS on Friday Nov 9 2012.

It’s important to note that farmers already have to pay a minimum daily R218 for each farm worker for their R3,000 a month for free rent, in addition to farmers providing in-kind payment of free electricity, free water-reticulation, free milk for their families, free health-care insurance and free transportation.

Also important: By law, unions are not allowed to negotiate ‘minimum wage’ agreements: this is done by ANC National Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant. After a week of silence, the Labour Department issued a statement saying they would meet ‘next week’ to ‘review the farm workers’ minimum wages. They also noted that ‘some farmers were paying more than minimum wages.’

At the moment, the early-grape varieties of De Doorns are in bloom and harvest-time is \pproaching: at least 650 hectares of these valuable vines were already torched since last Monday and 25 farms attacked; two farm-workers cottages also were torched after the families were violently chased out by violent black-males with whips. These families now have no homes. Farmers thus far estimate the damage at at least R14million. And they also face extra costs because they hired the Helivac protection team to try and save the valley from further destruction.

Propaganda statement: De Doorns farmworkers demands justified – Buti Manamela: SA Young Communist League

Buti Manamela 07 November 2012 YCL national secretary says silence of MEC Gerrit van Rensburg on De Doorns situation is revealing

Speech made by YCL National Secretary Cde Buti Manamela to De Doorns today.Revolutionary greetings from the more than 80 000 strong members of the The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba). We have been monitoring the situation of farm workers for some time and saw it fit to come and listen to the demands of De Doorn farm workers. The YCL supports the demands of the De Doorns farm workers in the Western Cape in their strike for higher wages, improved working conditions and an end to unjustified evictions. Some of these farm workers are paid just R55 a day by exploitative farm owners. Workers can’t be expected to raise families and sustain themselves on a mere R1400 a month. The YCL feels that the R150 they are demanding is justified considering the harsh conditions they endure and the hard work they do to maximize the profits of the farm owners. Some labour brokers used by these farm bosses transport farm workers in trucks that are not meant for passengers thus putting the life of workers in danger.Workers are on a daily basis evicted by the farm owners and have been encouraged to move to informal settlements where they will qualify for RDP houses. We condemn the violence against workers and demand an immediate solution to the impasse without the loss of life. We demand police immediately deal with the issue of the irate farmer who opened fire on workers yesterday. An investigation must be carried out as to the reason for the police handing over a coloured youth to a white shop owner to assault him after looting his shop rather than arresting him. These images, of a coloured youth being assaulted by a white shop owner were broadcast to the nation yesterday on eNCA news. The silence by the Western Cape MEC for agriculture Mr. Gerrit Van Rensburg is revealing. His choosing to ignore the situation further proves to us that himself and the party he belongs to and serves under, Democratic Alliance is not concerned about the working class and the poor.Since the De Doorns situation does not present an opportunity for media hype we will not see Madam Zille taking action on it. She will not be marching to the shop owner’s house this Sunday protesting neither against his assault nor to the farm owner house that shot protesting workers.Instead of rushing to invade Nkandla Helen Zille must first deal with the issues that are happening in her own backyard. She needs to quickly realize that the world does not revolved around making headlines and media attention. If the De Doorns situation was offering a pad to launch her 2014 elections campaign we don’t doubt that she would have shown her face there. At the centre of all this situation is the issue of land ownership. As the YCL we feel that transformation is moving at a snails pace. More land needs to be transferred to previously disadvantaged people. The willing buyer and willing seller mode is not serving our people and needs to be done away with and put up measures that will deal issues if land ownership with a sense of urgency. Last year, Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report into the conditions of farm workers in the Western Cape. The report found that the conditions of farm workers are perilous with many not being allowed the right to organise, decent sanitation or housing. The HRW called on immediate measures to be taken to improve the lives of the farm workers. The situation in De Doorns proves that the report was largely ignored by the provincial administration. Farm workers are amongst the most vulnerable in society, yet do some of the hardest work to ensure the nation is fed and nourished. We as the YCL say that this must change now.Issued by the YCL, November 7 2012

Cosatu threat: ‘Marikana has come to farms’

Update: Nov 13 2012 16h30: – SA Police Officer seriously  injured by stone-thrower  in rioting – Ceres

The week-long violence at the Hex River farms in the Western Cape has just moved up a notch: A SA police-officer was injured and rushed to Ceres hospital, it was confirmed at 11h00am by a hospital spokesman. The SA Police Service confirmed that the officer was in a serious condition after he was struck on the head by a thrown stone during rioting in Ceres.DE DOORNS VIOLENCE SPREADS TO CERES NOV132012 LANDBOUWEEKBLAD

. Thus far, 650 hectares of vinyards were torched at the 3,600-hectares De Doorns grapefarms: this happened on Monday last week. Today, farmers in the Witzenberg valley at 10h00am reportedly were trapped near Ceres by a large group of black protestors closing the Geido-pass. And wheat-fields were torched in that region at 11h00. The violence continued piraling outwards from the Hex River Valley with some crops at the Du Toit Farm Group’s Ceres farms also set alight at 11h30. Local residents say they often spotted the same protestors being moved from site to site in taxis to create a false impression of a ‘rolling mass action’’  across this region.

Du Toit Farm Group had just built a day-care centre at Vastrap farm in a partnership with the Maersk Sealand shipping line’s Per Heisselberg. Today, some crops on one of the group’s Ceres farms were torchedDu Toit Group

The police also blocked these ‘protestors’ from accessing the Stofland squatter camp just outside De Doorns.

Meanwhile a committee has been formed -  comprised of the ANC’s minister of agriculture and AgriSA’s farmers’ representatives –  to ‘look at the minimum wage issue’.  The Landbouweekblad does not mention whether ANC Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant – who sets that minimum wage each year in the first place – would also form part of this ad-hoc committee.  The Cosatu trade unionists also supported this minimum-wage set by that ANC-minister.

Cosatu calls for ‘nationwide strike to support farm workers’

Afrikaner farmers believe the attacks against their farms form an integral part of the violence-pattern which developed all year including at Marikana platinum- and other mining operations – and that this violence forms an integral part of the ANC/SACP/Cosatu ruling alliance’s sonamed ‘Second Transition’- by which is meant the ‘Second Stage of the Communist Revolution’:

On Saturday, Cosatu trade union called on farm-workers countrywide to strike illegally in support of the arson-attacks and terrorism against these small mostly Afrikaner-owned farms.

Last week some 650 hectares of the 3,600ha vineyards in the hstoric Hex River valley were torched.  Also attacked: the Somali shopkeepers in the townships and squatter camp near the town of De Doorns. The Somali refugee-families shops were looted last Monday-night by the “rolling flash mob’. DE DOORNS COSATU CALLS ON FARMWORKERS NATIONWIDE TO STRIKE NOV102012

Rolling flash mob brought their tyres, whipes and matches with them:

10,000 loaves of bread distributed to De Doorns workers:

On Saturday, the Hex River Table Grapes Association distributed 10,000 loaves of bread to help feed farm-workers’ families who couldn’t buy any food. (Below) Several hours later, Cosatu issued its call to create a nationwide ‘strike’ against all the white-owned farms.

DEDOORNS WORKER FAMILIES TENTHOUSAND LOAVES OF BREAD STRIKE Background: De Doorns exports 18million cartons of table grapes a year

the tiny town of De Doorns (The Thorns)   is at the heart of  3,800 hectares of historic grape-farms in the Hex River valley. It also is SA’s single-largest table-grape production area. From this small valley alone, some 18million 4,5kg cartons of table grapes are exported per year. SA’s total output countrywide averages 42-million cartons annually.

After a week of violence and intimidation &  negotiations between farmers’ representative AgriWesKaap and wealthy Cosatu trade union representative Tony Ehrenreich, the workers were ‘told to go back to work and rather  negotiate directly with the farmer to get your own wage increased’.

However the damage has been done: the bonds of trust which existed between the long-time Afrikaans-coloured workers and their employers will be very difficult to repair, observers believe.

On Monday-night – as if to celebrate and reward themselves for the day’s torching spree of 650 hectares (out of the total 3,800 hectares) of vinyards -  the rolling mob invaded the small agricultural town of De Doorns at the valley’s centre. They attacked the Somali-owned spaza-shops in an orgy of xenophobic looting. The police did fire some rubber bullets and tear-gas during this occasion.

Cosatu wants all farms attacked nationwide

Afrikaner farm families flee from Hex River Valley to escape arsonist mobs in De Doorns – Adriana Stuijt

Nov 10 2012 – On Saturday, Cosatu trade union called on farm-workers countrywide to strike illegally in support of the arson-attacks and terrorism against white-owned farms by 8,000 violent black protestors in De Doorns, Hex River valley.

In preparation for worse to come, De Doorns farm-families meanwhile are abandoning the area. Die Burger journalist Alani Janeke said ‘serious tensions arose in the Hex River valley. Farmers have been leaving their farms since Friday-night 9 November. The crisis has reached such proportions that popular Afrikaner singer/actor Steve Hofmeyr was asked to ‘pray for De Doorns: they are burning down our valley just for a few Rand, the barbarians. DE DOORNS COSATU CALLS ON FARMWORKERS NATIONWIDE TO STRIKE NOV102012 Above: These events form an integral part of the months-long attacks against the country’s income-producing enterprises such as its mining-infrastructures.   Early last Monday, the ruling communist-alliance of South Africa launched arson attacks against privately-owned farms the West Cape  – in their ongoing ‘ second stage ’ of their revolution.

The flourishing Hex River valley grape farms and (and over the past five months also the  Kuruman, North Cape region) were attacked. Cape Talk radio quoted a Cosatu trade unionist on Saturday (above) as calling for farm-workers across the country to also strike in support of the De Doorns workers.

This ‘rolling mob’ reportedly pulled Afrikaans-coloured farm workers from their cottages, intimidated them into ‘striking’, and set fire to vineyards and cottages of ‘uncooperative’ farm workers. After a week of violence and intimidation &  negotiations between farmers’ representative AgriWesKaap and wealthy Cosatu trade union representatives, the workers were told to go back to work and rather ‘negotiate directly with the farmer to get your own wage increased’. However the damage has been done: the bonds of trust which existed between the long-time Afrikaans-coloured workers and their employers will be very difficult to repair, observers believe. And Cosatu is adding still more fuel to the fire on Saturday by calling for ‘all farm workers’ to ‘strike in support’ of the De Doorns ‘Six Days of Strike Action’.

ONLY LABOUR MINISTER OF ANC CAN SET MINIMUM WAGES – AND SHE IS SILENT ON DE DOORN ISSUE:

By law in South Africa, minimum wages cannot in any case be negotiated between unions: they are annually set by the National Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant. That why the Hex River Valley farmers believe that the ‘wage-negotiations’ were just a ploy – that basically the 8,000-strong mob was bused in to wreck their farms and town’s economy for political reasons.

Political observers including West Cape Premier Helen Zille (who was chased off by rockthrowers shouting “Malema’ )say the attack on the Hex River Valley was politically-motivated.

DE DOORNS ZILLE THROWN WITH STONES NOV82012 Afrikaner farmers also believe the attack forms part of the pattern which developed all year including at Marikana and other mining operations – an integral part of the ANC/SACP/Cosatu ruling alliance’s sonamed ‘Second Transition’- by which is meant the ‘Second Stage of the Communist Revolution’:

Farm workers cottages torched – their families chased out

The Afrikaans agricultural weekly Landbouweekblad wrote: “On Wednesday-and Thursday-night rioters torched some farmworkers’ cottages at De Doorns after the workers had defied the violence-instigators and gone to work”. They quoted Agri-West Cape ‘s Porchia Adams. “Farmers and the agricultural community now are fedup with these inciting troublemakers,” she added. Pictures Jacques Beukes, Landbouweekblad.

Local farmers said Cosatu ‘negotiators’ threatened to start torching all the Western Cape farms ‘until they gave in to their demands of R150 a day wage increased (from R70). AGriWesKaap representatives were also personally threatened with their lives by Cosatu ‘negotiators’ and lodged formal charges with the local SAPS on Friday Nov 9 2012.

It’s important to note that farmers already pay a minimum daily R218 for each farm worker: as they also receive R3,000 a month for free rent, in addition to inkind payment of free electricity, free water-reticulation, free milk for their families, free health-care insurance and free transportation.

Also important: By law, unions are not allowed to negotiate ‘minimum wage’ agreements: this is done by ANC National Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant.

De Doorns exports 18million cartons of table grapes a year

Below: the tiny town of De Doorns (The Thorns)   is at the heart of  3,800 hectares of historic grape-farms in the Hex River valley. It also is SA’s single-largest table-grape production area. From this small valley alone, some 18million 4,5kg cartons of table grapes are exported per year. SA’s total output countrywide averages 42-million cartons annually.

HEXRIVER VALLEY GOOGLE EARTH OVERVIEW MAP At the moment, the early-grape varieties of De Doorns are in bloom: at least 650 hectares of these valuable vines were torched since Monday and 25 farms attacked; two farm-workers cottages torched after the families were violently chased out. These families now have no homes. Farmers thus far estimate the damage at at least R14million.

HEXRIVIER VINYARD JACQUES BEUKES PIC POLICE REFUSE TO INTERVENE NOV62012

‘Protestors’ claimed that this was a ‘spontaneous wage-dispute’ — and the Cosatu-trade-union leader as well as the SA Communist Youth league leader held inciting speeches on Wednesday and claimed to be ‘negotiating the minimum wage dispute’. Despite the fact that minimum wages are set by the National Labour Minister each year and that unions cannot ‘negotiate’ about them at all.

HEXRIVER FARMERS TRY TO SAVE THEIR VINEYARDS FROM TORCHING NOV92012 Above: Farmers jumped in and helped each other douse the flames while at least 25 farm-lands were torched. The Afrikaner farmers also called in more private security and sent their families away to friends and families to protect them from the mob.

    Xenophobic attacks against Somalis

The little live-in Spaza shops in De Doorns – run by Somali refugee-families as their sole source of income — were looted in an aggressive orgy of violence: local residents said they were helpless against such an overwhelming flash-mob:  video and history of  xenophobic violence in De Doorns: link

Enroute to De Doorns, the aggressive looters also burnt tyre-barricades and:  “basically destroyed everything they could vent their spleen on, including road-signs,” farmers said.

Below: Local farm-residents and farmers told me  that many of their coloured workers and their families were pulled from their cottages by the black protestors and sjambokked (whipped)  if they did not want to participate in the ‘protests.’ The workers were herded onto the road to prove that they were ‘striking’.

Hexrivier plaaswerkers word gedreig as hulle nie op paaie rondstaan nie in sg staking Two farmers arrested for trying defend their families from 8,000-strong mob: one charged with attempted murder:

Two farmers, Barry and Louis de Kock,  became so terrified of the huge mob invading their farm and surrounding their homestead that they fired warning shots in the air in an attempt to scare them away. The SAPS arrested the farmers for ‘attempted murder’.  Farmers said the SAPS basically ‘have their hands cut off after Marikana and can’t intervene, but they did fire rubber bullets to try and stop some of the worst excesses.’

Comment by Hex River Valley farmer after the rioting: “One cannot give in to their demands because where will it end? There is mechanical equipment available for grape-harvesting. The machine doesn’t complain, works all day, doesn’t ask for wage increases and doesn’t burn down your place. Let farmers get together and buy the technology to everyone’s advantage. Look, even if I have to go and help pick grapes – and I believe many farmers believe the same – we cannot give in. What will be next for our farms?”

     Farm Invasions Nov 2012:

Cosatu trade union movement has started a terror-campaign against Afrikaner farmers: invading farms with large groups of militant youths – torching the crops and grazing-lands. It started around Kuruman district on Sunday-night Nov 3 2012, destroying 10,000 hectares. On Tuesday Nov 5, a large group of people claiming to be ‘farm-workers’ disrupted traffic on the N1 while other groups invaded the valuable vineyards in the Hex River Valley near De Doorns, in the Western Cape, setting fire to the crops.
