Smallholder Joggie Papenfus shot in stomach

“One attacker wore a bulletproof vest with six guns strapped to it…’

CULLINAN. Feb 16 2011 – Afrikaans smallholder Joggie Papenfus was shot in the stomach after his in-laws, who manage the Wilde Sering Lodge near Cullinan, were attacked by two black men, one of whom was wearing a bulletproof vest with six guns strapped to it.  The attack occurred on Saturday-night Feb 12 2011.

The lodge is located in a nature-conservacy which protects the indigenous and increasingly rare Burkea Africana tree which cannot be successfully cultivated away from its natural habitat. Local land-owners, lodge-owners and residents do their best to protect the regions bio-diversity.

The attack was  launched just after 65-year-old Chris de Jager, wife Marie, 57, and colleague Dirkie du Toit had finished decorating a hall for a Valentine’s dinner at the popular lodge, located near Cullinan. Mr De Jager had left the hall for his homestead at 8pm and was attacked as soon as he stepped from the gate:  “Two black males jumped me as I walked out of the gate,’ said de Jager. “One attacker wore a bullet-proof vest with six firearms strapped to it. They pushed a pistol to my head, forced me inside the house, threw me down and tied me up with cable-binders. They threatened to cut off my ear if I did not give them the key to the safe. I said well they’d better cut it off then because I didn’t have the key. They pistol-whipped me,’ said de Jager.

While this was going on, Mrs de Jager and Mr du Toit also left the hall at 21:10 and drove to the De Jager homestead. However upon their arrival, they were suspicious so Mr Du Toit went into the house first while Mrs de Jager remained in the bakkie. Du Toit was ambushed inside the house, wrote Hilda Fourie of Beeld.
Then Mrs de Jager was attacked just as she was climbing from the bakkie: she said an unknown black man suddenly showed up next to it; she locked herself inside but the man smashed open the window, ripped her from the bakkie, threw her to the ground, dragged her by her feet to the gate. She was thrown across the wall and then dragged by her feet into the homestead.  Mrs De Jager, bleeding from the brutal treatment, was dumped next to Dirkie du Toit and two unnamed domestic workers who also had been tie dup and assaulted. The gang plundered the house and fled in a vehicle. Du Toit managed to get himself loose and untied everybody else. They contacted their son-in-law Joggie Papenfus, who was holding a braai with friends about 500m down the road – blissfully unaware of the drama inside the De Jager homestead.Papenfus and a friend Victor Steyn set off in immediate pursuit, and found the attackers driving near the Wilde Sering Lodge. The attackers immediately fired on the two Afrikaner men, stopped their car, fired again – hitting Papenfus in the stomach. He is in the trauma unit of a Pretoria hospital, and reportedly ‘stable’. SAPF spokesman Johannes Jaftha said nobody was arrested.http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Aanvallers-skiet-man-in-arm-maag-20110216
